To Buy or not To Buy?

Fairly new to this forum, so I’ve only been browsing so far. Have read loads of brilliant threads. Amazing what information you can find out.

Anyway, I’ll get to the point. Its time I traded in my 05 Saab 93 for another vehicle. My better half loves 4x4’s so I obviously went straight to looking at Land Rovers, known to some as “The King” of 4x4’s.

The Saab is an automatic and I do not want to go back to a manual ever again. As far as I know the RRS has an auto box, so that ticks one box. I love the looks the level of standard equipment, I love everything about it.

I get you’re all waiting for the “BUT”, so here it is. But, there are a few things that I need to discuss. Firstly the image of RRS drivers. Thanks to the environmentalists RRS drivers, as well as all 4x4 drivers, are looked upon as the rapist of the planet. Apparently the drivers of any Land Rover are the most hated of all road users.

This is mostly due to the cars CO2 levels and its MPG output. Funnily enough I have read that most RRS owners average around 23-25mpg and my Saab two litre turbo is only giving me 15-18mpg when it should be giving me up to 30mpg, maybe my trip computer is well out or maybe it just needs a service but I fill up every forth day with £30 of petrol!!

So I have looked into having a LPG conversion done on the RRS that I decide to buy. And this is where I have become stuck.

What I want to know is –

1. Has anyone here had a LPG conversion done on a RRS?
2. How does LPG compare with Diesel, does LPG save you any money?
3. If I decide on buying a RRS and brute power and speed is not a deciding factor which would be the better buy? A TDV6 or a TDV8?
4. Do you get any extra levels of equipment with one engine and not the other?
5. I am looking for a RRS HSE TDV6 or TDV8 and have around £35,000 to spend, is this a realistic amount for a second hand RRS?

I’m sure I’ll think of loads more questions but I think that’ll be enough for now.

Thanks for the help.

Val101 - welcome.

Firstly simply by doing a LPG conversion it will not stop ignorant people disliking you - it's more to do with the size of the car than the MPG. For £35k the best you can get is an early TDV6 HSE June/July 2005. No way will you get a TDV8 for that money. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

I'm not sure the costings for LPG but if you keep the car long enough you would probably save money as long as LPG isn't taxed in future the way diesel is now. One thing to think about is the fact that the LPG tank fits where the spare wheel is stored, the wheel is important as it gives the RRS strength in a rear shunt. Also if you travel on the Euro Tunnell they do not take LPG converted cars (I think!) 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

hiya

thanks for the advice, i've been having a look on the autotrader website and you can actually pick up a 06 TDV8 HSE for around £33,000 - £35,000.

I might give JE Engineering a ring, i have heard that they are the people to talk to regarding LPG.

I've just looked on AutoTrader and there are no TDV8's in that price range.
To confirm what VA has said, you won't get a TDV8 for anywhere close to that figure. I would be surprised if you could find one in the lower 40's let alone the lower 30's.
JE are the people to talk to regarding LPG conversions, but bear in mind, you can only convert a petrol and not a diesel, so that means either a Supercharged or finding a V8 petrol, which are pretty rare in the UK.
I have a very nice TDV6 HSE that I am selling. It is in Rimini Red with Alpacha leather. 30k miles. Thumbs Up

Paul

hiya paul, sorry your right, i was looking at the V8's and not the TDV8. So is the V8 not as good as the TDV6?
Also from what i'm reading alot of people here don't seem to like the TDV6, is it not worth having?

P.S I'm after a black one paul, sorry Sad

Nice sales pitch paul. Laughing Laughing

Welcome to the forum Val101 and the potential permagrin world of RRS ownership.

I agree with Very Annoyed and PaulB, you will struggle to find a TDV8 within the price range you are looking as it is still a fairly new model and is still holding its price reasonably well. So you are looking at a TDV6 which is still a good powerful engine, giving good returns on the mpg front. Performance can be improved by having the engine ecu "chipped" which gives improved performance and some say improved mpg returns too.

If you are looking for help in finding a suitable RRS within your price range try contacting one of the members on here, Kam100. He has helped lots of fellow members to find and purchase new and used vehicles. He has lots of contacts in the trade and is a genuinely nice guy. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

What V8 are you talking about

The TDV8 has more power then the TDV6 and has almost the same MPG as the TDV6

The 4.4 V8 can have a LPG conversion

If you can get a TDV8 for £35k i'll have another for that price Wink RRS TDV6 Gone but still around

hiya TB, thanks for the warm welcome.

My problem is that i get bored with cars way to easily, and its cost me a fortune in the past, I’ve had everything from skylines, subarus to the new m3. so my next purchase has to last me till I’m 60, or my wife will kill me, I’m 34 at the moment.

The real crux at the moment is the price of petrol, like I’ve said before, my Saab 93 is needing £30 of fuel every forth day or so, that’s almost a tenner a day. I have to find a way of cutting my fuel costs, so that’s why I’m in two minds about buying a RRS, lets face it, they are not considered the best for fuel economy.

Oh how I long for the days when I was growing up and petrol was under 50p a litre, can anyone else here remember those days?

JayMann it was the V8 4.4 that i was looking at, my mistake i thought it was a TDV8. Is the V8 better than the TDV6 in your opinion?

The petrol V8 is fine, it is just rather thirsty and doesn't hold its value particularly well as a result.

You don't want a black one, they're as common as muck Laughing You want one like this:

Ignore the wheels though, it has standard 19" Y-spoke alloys now.

paul thats a gorgeous pic, imagine how much better it would have been if it were black, lol

jaymann the m3 was on a 05 plate, bought it in 06 so it was just about a year old, kept it for about 8 months then sold it for 2 reasons really, needed a huge deposit for a house and second of all the SMG gearbox was a nightmare! but it was an amazing car, convertible also, real posing machine but i lost about £8000 on it, thats about £1000 for every month i kept it, ouch!!

but the car i miss the most has to be the subaru, i fell in love the the sound of the exhaust, sad i know, but it made an amazing sound.
