Chipping/remapping makes a HUGE difference to the car. LR dont do as standard for several reasons, but the dealers now flog it as an after-sales accessory! Money, money, money!!! ![]() |

I have never "bought in" to this explanation that the engine is tuned to cope with all country conditions and fuels. Hell Landrover have dozens of other market specific features so having a different engine tune in each market would actually be very easy to achieve (simply hook the ECU up and download the "Spainish" patch or whatever). No the only reason I can come to terms with is that the manufacturer deliberately leaves a substantial margin for error in engine, gearbox and transmission reliability by setting the standard tune to a "moderate" setting. This is particularly necessary when the manufacturer is using a new design for such components, whose long term reliability and resistance to wear & tear is unknown. If the manufacturer had a high incidence of warranty claims for major components (like engines, gearboxes, transmissions, diffs etc) then the costs could be astronomical. Chipping the vehicle eats into that margin for error and increases the risk of a mechanical failure. However if you are prepared to sacrifice a bit of margin of error for a faster, more responsive and more economical vehicle (that with a friendly dealer will still likely be covered by manufacturers warranty) then go for it ..... I was told officially it was restricted due to euro-wide emmisions' rules, as exint2 says. However, like Smarticus, I dont buy into it and believe it's a "built-in margin" to prevent the engine being powered to the max. |

I would go with Smarticus' reasoning. |

And we're all forgetting the manufacturers desire to keep us 'hooked' into their brand by releasing higher power models to keep us all aspiring for more. E.g if you chip your TDV6 why would you possibly want to buy the TDV8???? |

its common in the truck and plant game for engines to be down rated and then as the product gets older and they have facelifts that include power upgrades ,i know of one truck maufacturer that brought out one of the first 500 hp trucks , the same engine was used in military applications upto 1000 hp with only pump mods |

For the 4.4 you mean? Not in the UK - indeed that engine is no longer available on the UK market. |

Now thats a good question...I presumed that the 'old' BMW engine had been deleted and replaced with the 4.2 V8 from the Jaguar XJ....but I not sure...anyone know? Chips with everything |
