EGR pipe, crossover pipe or a seal on one of the exhaust clamps |

Do you think this would cause an acrid smell in the cabin and also a similar burnt oily smell in the engine bay even when the engine has been turned off ? Thank you |

i had something similar with my old car. have you checked the cabin air filter? might be worth a look, though im not sure if it'd cause such strong smells. |

Thanks fon the idea, yes I’ve even replaced it . It’s a strong burnt oil smell and very evident under the bonnet , in fact even as you walk up to it . |

If any of those components have cracked and are leaking exhaust gas, that will smell in the engine bay and in the cabin as some of the air going in to the cabin could pick up some of that exhaust gas. The EGR and crossover pipe aren't going to be easy to see without pulling some bits off - the crossover pipe runs across the back of the engine in front of the firewall, for example. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

Well that would certainly tie in with the symptoms ! I will try to get underneath and have a look . I presume there isn’t a tool to sniff exhaust fumes? Once again thank you for your help. It’s all helping track down the cause 🙏 |

Ps has anyone out there replaced a EGR crossover pipe on a L494? Any idea of the difficulty and what’s involved? |

Hi guys, because the burnt oily smell is still very evident days after I’ve switched the engine off, may this suggest an oil leak somewhere? Just a thought |

The problem with fitting two copper washers instead of one is that the injector will now sit further into the cylinder head. I’m not sure on how far they actully protrude normally. But if it’s now sitting slightly into the head it could well start to either interfere with the spray pattern or erode and damage the head. |

Hi Mac, a very good point made but I estimate the thickness of the extra washer equates to the material I removed . ( approximately) …iIts been running super smooth for a while now so hopefully no connection between the two problems .

We have good news 🙏…I took all the engine covers off etc and disconnected all the wires to the injectors …carefully measured the resistance across the 3 injectors on the near side bank . I injector showed a much higher resistance across the coil and interestingly, occasionally to ground also .Luckily I had a spare ( secondhand ) injector which I fitted and all is ok now!!!! Thanks for your help guys and hope this helps someone else at some point🙏 |
