Eye watering and difficult breathing in cabin

Hi, I have recently purchased a L494 Range Rover Sport. 2014 3.0 Diesel.
Fantastic car except I’m experiencing terrible problems with cabin fumes. These smell like burnt oil and are bad enough to burn the back of my throat and make my eyes water.
2 garages have looked at this and neither have solved it.
Please help

EGR pipe, crossover pipe or a seal on one of the exhaust clamps

Hi Mikey thank you so much for a swift reply . Is this something I could check from underneath?

Do you think this would cause an acrid smell in the cabin and also a similar burnt oily smell in the engine bay even when the engine has been turned off ? Thank you

i had something similar with my old car. have you checked the cabin air filter? might be worth a look, though im not sure if it'd cause such strong smells.

Thanks fon the idea, yes I’ve even replaced it . It’s a strong burnt oil smell and very evident under the bonnet , in fact even as you walk up to it .

If any of those components have cracked and are leaking exhaust gas, that will smell in the engine bay and in the cabin as some of the air going in to the cabin could pick up some of that exhaust gas.

The EGR and crossover pipe aren't going to be easy to see without pulling some bits off - the crossover pipe runs across the back of the engine in front of the firewall, for example. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Well that would certainly tie in with the symptoms ! I will try to get underneath and have a look . I presume there isn’t a tool to sniff exhaust fumes? Once again thank you for your help. It’s all helping track down the cause 🙏

Ps has anyone out there replaced a EGR crossover pipe on a L494? Any idea of the difficulty and what’s involved?

Hi guys, because the burnt oily smell is still very evident days after I’ve switched the engine off, may this suggest an oil leak somewhere? Just a thought

Hi everyone and thanks for your inputs. I paid 2 guys £500 each to solve my problem but without joy.
However in the end i rolled up my sleeves and tackled the problem myself. I am not a mechanic but I am a highly qualified engineer.
I traced the fault to number 6 diesel injector leaking at the base of it. I tried fitting new self to no avail. i eventually bought a re-seating tool from eBay . I re-seated it, fitted 2 washers instead of one and the problem has been solved. I jet cleaned the engine bay beneath the faulty injector of all the leaked diesel and the smell was cured

The problem with fitting two copper washers instead of one is that the injector will now sit further into the cylinder head. I’m not sure on how far they actully protrude normally. But if it’s now sitting slightly into the head it could well start to either interfere with the spray pattern or erode and damage the head.

Hi Mac, a very good point made but I estimate the thickness of the extra washer equates to the material I removed . ( approximately) …iIts been running super smooth for a while now so hopefully no connection between the two problems .
Once again, thank you for your input .

We have good news 🙏…I took all the engine covers off etc and disconnected all the wires to the injectors …carefully measured the resistance across the 3 injectors on the near side bank . I injector showed a much higher resistance across the coil and interestingly, occasionally to ground also .Luckily I had a spare ( secondhand ) injector which I fitted and all is ok now!!!! Thanks for your help guys and hope this helps someone else at some point🙏
