Possibly the best thing Range Rover ever has done

If you’re not doing your own oil changes (at least on L320 5.0 L petrols) and I think most others, do yourself a favor. Grab an OEM fluid evacuator 9.5 L large, or similar, and enjoy doing a topside oil change - without removing skid plates or crawling under your rig.

Ever removed your oil fill cap and noticed a strange circular tube (as you peer down to your timing chain, and wonder when the guides are going to disintegrate), that’s how most dealers drain your crankcase. I’ve done these for years, and it’s a beautiful process. Cartridge filter is topside as well, you’ll probably need an oil filter cap removal tool. Takes longer to fill and not spill then it does to remove the old oil and change filter.









Much easier oil service on this vehicle versus my others, which require crawling under.

Don’t pay $600 plus to the LR stealer, do it in 20 minutes and never grovel on the ground. Happy new year! Vincit qui se vincit

You cannot do what you suggest on the 2010 or earlier diesel models as there are two sump plugs and draining by the method you suggest would not drain the turbo return line sump. Also it is a good change to see if there are any leaks present when carrying out an oil change.
I believe that mechanics in the US charge US$200 or more per hour. You would go out of business here charging that rate.
I used to get my oil changed at the dealer and it cost AU$200 for the oil (about 10l) plus the filter (about AU$50). Less than AU$350 (just over US$250).
You cant get rid of 10l of oil in this part of the world apart from taking it to the tip as the weekly rubbish trucks will not take 10l oil containers full of oil.

I think the double sump was only a thing on the TDV8 due to the turbos being placed lower in the engine bay than would be ideal. The oil return system was devised in order to ensure they drained when running at off road angles. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Iv been using 1 of those for years, still drop the sump plug every now and again just to make sure there is nothing nasty hiding in there.

I have a 6L one and when I tried it on the RRS I found the suction tube didn’t reach the bottom of the sump so I could only get about 4 and a bit litres out.

I drop the plate now. Steve
