Failed alternator

Looks as if my alternator has failed,, battery just died overnight after ok the day before. My normally reliable jump starter wouldn't even look at it. Bit the bullet and got the aa out, even his portable unit was no good,,,, resorted to the back up unit,,,, ie his van and success. Charging rate seemed to be erratic at times so only being a few minutes from home he put a 20min boost into my battery to allow me to get home.
I know the preferred choice of alternator is the denso unit,, but whilst looking last I came across rebuilt units. Has anyone ever had any luck with these,, or are they only a short term fix. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Had exactly the same problem a few days ago, I had to have it recovered along the roadside, everything went dead just before every warning light came on, the recovery driver tried to boost start it to get it on the lorry and it was just draining his booster, had to winch it on.

My problem was a an Alternator fail , the battery completely emptied itself trying to keep things going, had to have a new battery as well as that would not take a charge afterwards, plus diagnostics to clear all the warning symbols. That’s my Christmas present this year.
Chris.

Looks like mines just gone today as well. Charging system error message, only got 12.2v across battery terminals with engine running. Only had car 3 weeks! Covered by warranty though luckily

Covered by the consumer protection laws actually. The warranty is a red herring used by some used car salesmen to fob people off. Either way, you're sorted. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

So you actually got a charging error message? No warning on mine at all as far as I know as I wasn't driving it at the time. I have since charged the battery overnight on my ctek and had the car running and it appears to be charging ok,, seems to be steady at the 14.8V mark. I think I need to have the battery tested even though it's less than 3 years old. Wondering whether to to bite the bullet and put a new alternator in anyway as it is the original,, at least I'll be sure that's going to be ok. Everything's at a stop at the moment as I'm away for a couple of days. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Yes I was driving along when the battery light came on followed by pretty much every warning light, the engine died leaving us stranded on the road, we managed to open our doors but the others locked including the rear tailgate where the towing hook is, the recovery drivers jumper could not put enough power into the system to do anything, he had to put a strap on it and winch onto the lorry. I have read of a very disturbing situation where the Range Rover engine caught fire and the doors would not open, luckily they had the sun roof open to get out, JLR were asked to comment on that but did not.

Thanks for the info Chris,, just trying to gather as much as I can,, I couldn't believe that no warnings surfaced at all on mine,,, it was just the next day that problems arose when trying to start it first thing. Battery was properly flat by the time I got there and tested it,, less than 11v.and maybe the erratic charging was the alternator trying to charge a severely depleted battery. Now that the battery is fully charged the charging rate seems steady,,,, but there's always going to be a niggle in the back of my mind if there is a problem waiting to surface again. Need a battery health check to put my mind at ease I think. 2010 RRS, TDV8
