OBD Solar Charger

Hello all,
Need a little advise please,
I purchased one of these devices
AA 4.8v trickle charger

I have been using this for a while now since about late April 2021,
I have checked with a 12v tester and is/was getting 15-18v depending on
how much sunlight there is, I have now turned on my Blackvue parking mode
and the battery is being drained again to the point where the car has to be run
every other day to keep it going, the problem I am having is when I try to see if
the charge is coming through to the pins in the OBD2 Plug I am unsure if this is possible,

I get the feeling if there is charge coming through the connector to the OBD2 plug and I connect
the red to pin 16 and the black to pin 4 they should show the voltage coming through from the
trickle charger?

I am not an electrician and I am possibly just extending the life of the battery,
I know the alternator is running 14.3-14.6ish, and the battery without the camera in park
mode holds about 12.2v with the trickle attached, I have had the car 3 years now so maybe its
time to change it as well as the trickle charger working.. ===========================================

12.2 volts is low, should be around 12.6 volts fully charged

Maybe need a larger solar panel, I use a 10 watt one.

Plenty on that well known site!

Sounds like this needs to be disconnected before starting the car,
if this is the case an OBD2 is much faster and convenient,,

Could get a second one and boost to 9.6 through the OBD2 and see if that works,
with a splitter so I can attach both panels.. ===========================================

I would get the battery charged fully with a mains charger and then monitor the voltage after that.

A solar panel will keep a battery topped up but is not going to charge it from a low state.

I have no experience of OBD charging and wonder if it works on a Sport. Presumably the instructions state that it is suitable for leaving permanently connected?

Not all solar panels are OK, they need a diode to stop the battery trying to "charge" the panel at night. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

Disconnect the solar and measure the pins on the car.

If you get approx 12v then the solar charger should function.
If not a fuse could be blown

Thank you all for your advise,

Jimbg,,
I do disconnect mine before starting, and being the OBD2 plug its very easy,
as it sits very conveniently in the drivers footwell, so I just unplug as I get in
and plug it in again when I park up, unless its not going to be a long stop..

Andy K,,
I have now checked from the solar charging plug using pins 16 & 4
and I am at 2:30pm and bright sunshine getting 14.4v so not a great amount,
but probably affected by the window tint..

Will be checking the vehicle OBD Port at the weekend to make sure all is well
that end as you say looking for at least 12v

then with all my new knowledge I will have to decide if its going to be enough,
or I may have to do the 12v accessory trick in the, rear and connect there instead with
something more powerful,
Only problem might be the ease of use if it still needs to be disconnected when running
the car..

As always guys, thanks for your help.. ===========================================

Good luck with it, probably only putting in less than 0.4 amp which will take a long , long time to get it fully charged. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

As I said before, if you could get it fully charged with a decent charger then the panel would probably be fine for any small drain,etc. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

I thought my battery was going dud as the car was only used infrequentley i had to use my jump stater battery to get it started, and then have many faults come up whilst driving, then my van engine blew during covid whilst that was being rebuilt, i used the rangey everyday for work and all faults dissapeared, as all say here they like to be used and i have to agree, as my work can be 7 days a week i bought the solar charger and the beast always starts and no faults even when not used for weeks or even longer.
