LPG Anyone?

Although most owners on this site are running diesel and are therefore as I understand it not a candidate for an LPG conversion, i'd love to hear from anyone that has converted a RRS or indeed a FFRR.

I'll shortly own an SC and although I won't have a great mileage, I do intend to own it for a long time. I've got a feeling that LPG is going to be incentivised in the next budget(s) so:-

1) Is LPG similarly efficient to the same volume of petrol? I.E. Power, response and consumption.

2) Typically what does it cost?

3) Where do you fill the car up from? - Where is the nozzle on the car?

4) Does fitting the tank in the spare wheel well really forgoe structural rigidity (in terms of an alloy not being there) - This was suggested on another forum but i don't buy that.

5) If fitted in the spare wheel well, is a pump and some tyre chemical enough to get you out of most flat tyre situations?

6) Resale - Is it all a bit weird and wonderful and therefore puts people off?

7) Is an LPG car exempt from the congestion charge?

I'd love to here from the our forum sponsors - JE Engineering - on this too.

Lots to talk about! Very Happy

Thanks again for a constructive and help community....

Re your question 4, the spare tyre DOES form part of the rear crash protection zone. I was originally told this by an LRE instructor in the "walk around" you do before setting off. I've since had that confirmed by various different sources, so I'm not sure how you'd stand if indeed they house the LPG tank in the spare wheel cavity (as I believe they tend to when converting an RRS). I'd speak with LR CS and see if you can get their viewpoint from a safety/legal perspective down in writing.

Thanks Shmoogle. My only issue with the above is that the spare wheel by definition (and obviously) is not always in the well. I can't understand how LR could design a car whose rear crash safety depends on a piece of equipment, that might not be there. 2022 P440e AB

But theoretically, if you put the spare wheel on you'd probably put the flat back into the well, no? You can't do that with 20s I don't think, as it's only a 19in wheel or smaller that will fit in the well - but basically you're right, it's a bit of an odd way to do things.

I belive that the law states that all Road Vehicles supplied with a spare wheel must, at all times, hold the spare wheel within the spare wheel cavity. Therefore it does make sense. J

What happens when you change the wheel - there is a time when the wheel isn't there! I actually believe the law states that if you carry a spare wheel the thread on the tyre must be legal. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

And what about the cars that are being supplied with no spare wheel just an aerosol of sealant. That's not a lot of use in a crash. I believe the law now is that you don't need to carry a spare. Also VA, do you put yours back under the car after you have been offroading rather than leaving it on the roof rack? If you leave it on the roof rack you should cover it as that strong UV that you guys in the SE have will degrade your spare relatively quickly compared to when it was underneath the car 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

My understanding is:

1. It is not a legal requirement to carry a physical spare (as Tim mentions, several new cars don't ship with a spare tyre, simply a aerosol sealant kit that will get you to the nearest KwikFit etc)
2. If you do carry a spare tyre, it's tread must be legal (indeed I have failed an MOT for this reason before, so know it's the case).
3. The spare wheel/tyre has been designed into the rear crash protection zone in the RRS and isn't a legal requirement for any car that carries a spare tyre.

What would be interesting to know though - back to the question asked at the beginning of this thread - would be what is the stance of insurers etc for LPG converted cars that fill the spare wheel well with an LPG tank....

Indeed. There is a 4.4 Petrol/LPG RRS (taxi!!!) running around Aberdeen so it can be done legally done. But the spare wheel well, as far as I can tell, is exposed. I can see my spare from the rear of the car. Shouldn't it be covered or something? 2022 P440e AB
