Which replacement tyres?!?

Just about to replace the tyres on my 2006 Sport. At the moment they are Scorpions but I am wondering if things have moved on and there is a better tyre that would give perhaps a better ride and less noise?!? Andrew Kennedy

I'm currently running 275/45 R20 Nexen Roadian HP and so far have been really pleased with them.

Reasonably priced @ £135 each inc VAT and fitting, seem to be wearing well (although they've only been on for around 3000mls) and as quite as the previous mix of Davanti and Landsail that was on when I bought the RRS.

They're not a full on AT or winter tyre, however they do have a M+S rating, how good they'll be in the snow/mud I don't know yet as i haven't ventured off the tarmac yet. To be fair they are very much a road bias tyre but seemed to get good reviews in general and i know a number of the guys on the FFRR forum have them and rated them well.

The M+S mark is fairly unhelpful really, it just shows that the tyre tread has some big grooves in it, basically. A winter tyre will carry M+S but having M+S on any other tyre doesn't infer any winter ability. Likewise All Terrains will have M+S but M+S doesn't infer any real off road ability.

I wouldn't expect the Roadian (or any other tyre marked solely M+S) to be any good in snow. It might be a bit better in traction than the normal tyre (but 4wd will be giving you that anyway) but I bet the braking performance is no better, and that's the bit that matters really.

If I was going to fit a road-only tyre, I'd be looking at the Michelin CrossClimate SUV or the Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen 2 SUV. Good all year round performance. Buy them new at the start of winter if good performance in bad weather is an important issue for you. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I have Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico 275/40/20 106Y on mine and for my purposes they perform brilliantly. Although I did my homework when the time came to replace I just couldn't find a better tyre so I played safe & loyal and I have no regrets whatsoever. (I can't put 275/45/20s on mine here in Portugal or it will fail the annual inspection.) Barrie.

I've used the Grabber AT3 and it's a good AT tyre. I found it got a bit less grippy on wet tarmac once half worn but that's probably down to the sharp edges having gone and affects most tyres in some way compared to their as-new performance.

The AT3 worked well off road too. Decent snow performance, less good in icy conditions.

A decent tyre all round. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I dropped into my local LR/ tyre specialists (Loughrans at Towcester) this week to enquire about put 275/45 r20 AT3's on my RRS. They were very clear in explaining to me that if I swap from 40% to 45% profile tyres then I have invalidated my insurance. Do you guys declare to your insurers that you've swapped from 40's to 45's?

I haven't fitted larger yet but considering the 275/45/20's instead of 275/40/20, when speaking with the insurer they said they need to know but it doesn't affect the premium (maybe not in all cases, this was at renewal).

ANY change whatsoever from standard could invalidate a claim if it can be said the change may be to blame. Even pink furry dice could be said to make it more nickable..... Rolling with laughter 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

I have a Fiesta that I use to hack to work in most of the time, it is fully comp with protected no claims etc etc. I was paying £20 per month for it prior to moving house. I have only moved from one end of a village to the other about 1/2 mile and only changed the last digit of my post code. I informed them of a change of address and they wanted £80 per month... Shocked Shocked absolutely ridiculous. Needless to say cancelled all my insurance and sorted new. At least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask!! Current: 2010 RRS 3.6 TDV8 HSE

Interestingly (or maybe not for some) Smile when I enquired with my insurance company about changing the tyres from 275/40/20 to 275/45/20 they said it would not cause any issues but they would note it on the policy.

However, here in Portugal, if the car has wheels and/or tyres that are different to the sizes shown on the inside of the drivers door (or the manufacturers original spec) I'm told by my very reliable independent 4x4 mechanic that they will fail it on the annual IMT (MOT) inspection. Of the various sizes shown on mine 45s are not there. Barrie.

During the mid year months we make little or no use of our 06's off road capability (tarmac and unpaved roads) so we run OE sized 19" Avon ZX7 all round. Correct size, load and speed ratings, "A" rated for wet grip. They work well if you're making progress along cross country roads - we do an annual trip to central Italy, the ZX7s are great across varying types of roads, speeds and weather conditions.

During the colder/winter months we do get the RRS off road (mainly grass and muddy tracks) and swap to a full winter, road biased off road tyre - a Pirelli of some description which does a good job for us.

As well as the Michelin and Goodyear recommendations for a year round road tyre take look at Bridgestone's Weather Control A005 - no direct personal experience but seemingly well regarded. Likely to be fitting a set to our Evoque for year round use and will be fitting a set to my old Boxster for Winter use based on feedback from others..
