Took about four days to finish the MINI in the end - timing chain and valve stem seals.. that did involve a trip to BMW to pick up a new Vanos sprocket bolt (stretch bolt - couldn't get the chain off without removing the sprocket, despite some people reporting success in doing so, so needed a replacement bolt) and crank pulley bolt (also a stretch bolt - I already had one but, er, made a mistake Laughing )

Anyway.. in the mean time, I've had to buy a new battery for the RRS and now, this morning, "Service Required" popped up on the display - I assume (and you know what assumptions make!) that means it needs an oil change, in the absence of any other information. Unless it's lying because the battery dipped to 9.2V when cranking, of course..

Might have to invest in a GAP tool to reset the light after an oil change, because the "stalk button dance" to reset the service indicator looks annoying!

If you intend keeping the vehicle for some time really worth investing in the Gap Tool, always easy to sell s/h if no longer required.

Yup very true - just a £400 spend I wasn't planning right now Smile Then again .. the "Service Required" message has disappeared now Question

Very odd - unless it was a false positive due to the (verrrry) tired battery dropping to 9V when cranking; the message popped up immediately after everything in the cabin reset itself during cranking due to low voltage (which is noticable because the CD player starts hunting for a disc, screen goes black, takes a while to come back on etc). Will replace the battery and cross fingers, first! Whistle 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

So .. I invested in a Gap tool, and also had both front wheel bearings replaced with Timken units at the local indy - it's just too damn cold & damp outside to grovel around on the floor changing bearings, and since it won't fit in my garage..

Nothing much to report since December aside from a couple of new rattles.. the General Grabber AT3 tyres are still excellent - nice compliant ride, not too noisy on the motorway, no big hit in MPG or anything like that.

Although I did find yesterday that, in the wet, giving it a boot-full out of a T-junction will result in a very nice four-wheel drift requiring a quick arm-full of opposite lock Whistle Whistle 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Fingers crossed the new (exchange) PCM from Turners fixes things, because I just paid the bill (mine failed the bench test, so I am hopeful)

I see that between Sept 2020 and Sept 2021 you only had an MOT and service items cost to pay. Got to be happy with a year's ownership for a couple of hundred quid. He says, looking on the bright side of things. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Yep, I think it's the standard JLR ownership experience:

99% of the time it's like running any other car (consumables, service, MOT)
1% of the time it's an eye watering repair bill Laughing

To be fair, if I'd done some of the work myself I could have saved a lot on labour, but a few of those jobs (like the header tank) were "Take it to the indy because I just don't have time" and some of them (like "Why does the aircon gas only stay in the system three months") are somewhat elective and I took it to the indy because I didn't have time - and paying someone to strip half the front end looking for a pinhole A/C leak is never cheap! (I probably should have just assumed the condenser and changed it myself - I still need to as the indy couldn't source one at the time) 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Update now that the car is fixed and running again - brilliant service from Avenger, would absolutely recommend them for anyone local(ish) to Peterborough - after a new low pressure fuel pump, fuel filter, key battery and a repair to the battery-box fuse box:
