Turbo replacement - cost

Can anyone give me a guide as to what I can expect the quote to be from a UK Land Rover dealership garage for replacing the turbo on a 2006 Sport? I am in France and expecting a quote from my local dealership and I'm wondering how it might differ from a UK garage. Andrew Kennedy

Expensive.

Body needs lifting to do it easily.

I have never done it, but I have read that it can be done through the wheel arch, but not easy.

Is it actually the turbo that has failed? The reason I ask is that a sticking variable vane actuator is a common problem resulting in reduced performance. There is an updated part to rectify this and i understand it can be done with the body on. A lot of owners have managed to free it off using a bit of wire and grease. Worth looking into initially.

The experts say it can be done easily in 10 hours lifting body.
Or painfully in 10 hours not lifting it.

So if u have a post lift, lift it.

£3.7k for an sdv6 though that is both turbos and a body off job. Indy price. Should be less for 1 turbo even at main dealer prices as the turbos alone are around £1200 each for Garrats.

Have a look at this

I make the assumption that you have had the codes read. It may be helpful to post them on here as people may be able to suggest what they mean.

Unfortunately I can't give the codes as the garage hasn't given them to me. After they carried out the diagnostic (for which they didn't give me a bill - which leads me to feel they didn't find a problem and they don't want to take any responsibility). All they did say was they thought it was the turbo causing the problem of the ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT message showing on the dash - they sent me on my way saying come back if the warning comes up again. It's a 2006 Sport and hasn't done 100,000 miles. The guy who usually looks after servicing for me gave me a Censored and told me to PUT YOUR FOOD DOWN MORE OFTEN which I do now and use a better grade of diesel.....any other thoughts as to how I can try to fee up the turbo gratefully received!!!  Andrew Kennedy

My turbo failed last year with only 15k on my Disco, which is the same vehicle as the Sport. Luckily it's still under warranty otherwise it would have cost me 6k and they did lift the body the change the turbo.... 2010 RR 5.0 Autobiography

you don't want to be changing the turbo, if it "might be the turbo".

Check how free the actuator rod is

Thanks for yours!! I've had a look at the video - it's something I would certainly like to have-a-go-at. Would you say the car needs to be up on a lift, or possibly could be done by crawling under the car?!? Andrew Kennedy

Iv'e never had the need to do it myself, thankfully. If access is via the wheel arch, I imagine jack that corner up, axle stand under the chassis rail, wheel off and get stuck in. I would think that it would be a lot easier if you have access to a lift though.

Yes exactly as above.

I have heard of people doing it only with the suspension set to off road height (and maybe the steering on full lock)
however the first time I would guess you want to wheel off to try and find the rod. (it's not easy)

Good morning,
I just saw you post and even if it's a bit older I wanted to ask you some infos.
I'm in the same situation you were few years ago, I also live in France.
where you able to find a good and honest mechanic capable to replace your turbo/s ?
Your answer would be very helpful as I'm having hard time finding one.
Thank you.

F.
