Chopped in the 2.7 for a 5.0

Had the 2.7 since last April and recently my job changed so I'm no longer commuting from Oxford area to Reading every day. Took the opportunity to upgrade from my '58 2.7 HSE to a '59 5.0 autobiography last night. Decent service history, 4 brand new decent tyres, good MOT, fair price and very clean interior. 70,000 miles (my 2.7 had done 109,000).

First impressions so far after around 80 miles in it (which I expect is just over a quarter of a tank?):

Absolutely phenomenal engine. An almost 3 ton brick has no right to accelerate that fast. The sound is glorious too. Not sure how loud it is from behind, but I might be tempted to cut a silencer out (like you can with the 4.2 fatty). We'll see, I don't want an ASBO-mobile but a bit of roar with the foot down is so pleasing. The interior is far, far better than the 2.7. Different league. The ride on the motorway is smoother, and so quiet. AB look is gorgeous.

Only cons so far are a disappointing lack of bluetooth music playback (I can't believe it doesn't have this!), and the infotainment interface is awful, but it works and I'll get used to it.

I had a bit of suspension creak, typically this happened 30 mins after I bought it. I took it on a decent test drive, good as gold, did the deal then went to a supermarket car park to pair my phone and plan my route back. Driving away it was creaking, raising/lowering suspension it was creaking. After 30-40 mins of driving and a good blast on the motorway the sound has gone. Seems fine this morning too after a quick blast up/down the a40. Will probably pop it to James French tomorrow, maybe the bushes need replacing or something just needed to loosen up. Garage will cover costs after a quick phone call.

All in all a simply awesome machine so far!

Hi Tim,

I stopped with parking brake on. Released parking brake, drove away and the creaking began. Re-applied PB, released, creaking continued. Stopped after a bit of a drive.

I've used the PB a few times since and it's been OK. One thing I wondered was whether it struggled to release properly.

5.0 Supercharged or normally aspirated? I just bought a 2010 5.0 normally aspirated. I have had it nearly a week. I also came (a long time ago) from pre facelift 2009 2.7TDV6. The 5.0 V8 is quite an engine, I agree.

For daily driving around town and the suburbs at 40 mph, mine seems to sit at 1400rpm. 14.2 mpg....woo hoo, couldn't care less, bring me another oil well Laughing Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

BKHK, We don't get the NA 5ltr in the UK, only 3.0lt S/C,5ltr S/C or SVR on the petrol front

Tom, it could be the park brake as mine creaks a bit if it has been parked up for a week or so without use but it disappears after a drive. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim,

I am starting to think the same thing. I've just taken it out again, slow turns and speed bumps aren't making a sound. Fast acceleration doesn't, either, neither does sudden braking. It seems to have completely disappeared. The EPB was sorted out around 10,000 miles ago. The creaking was incredibly loud, head turning in fact! Pretty embarrassing. I'll carry on testing it over the next day.

The brakes are pretty squeaky too but slowly that's disappearing. The discs are pretty new and the pads are, so again probably from being sat about.

I absolutely love driving this thing, what an engine.

Enjoy Smile They seem like excellent engines. How's the acceleration figures compared to the supercharged?

Tim, yes the NA 5.0 seems very rare, more common in the USA I think.

Tom, not the acceleration of the SC but a decent shove when required! Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

If the squeak is at the rear then it could be the hub bushes. These are the ones that connect the rear upright to the wishbones. Mine has a had a couple done. The squeak is pretty loud and very noticeable at slow speed.

With the RRS parked up, try rocking it from side to side. You might be able to pin point which corner is making the noise. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Squeak or creak? I've had the squeaks before on the 2.7, had to get the bushes done twice in 14 months on that one.

This was a creak, and definitely sounded like when you try to drive away with a handbrake on, but 100 times louder! I thought it was suspension because when I raised/lowered the car at a stand still it made the noise, but as it hasn't happened once since then I'm fairly convinced in my head that it was the EPB.

A couple of pics:

Another blast for 30 mins and I'm pretty sure it's bushes. Started fine and at the end of the drive it was creaking when I turned slowly, up onto the drive etc. Same sort of noise as the 2.7 when the bushes were gone on that, but less squeaky. Brakes pretty squeaky too by the time I got home. Irritating. I'll see if I can get it looked at by James French tomorrow. Other than that, it's spot on!

Front lower arm bushes confirmed. Annoying but being done on Monday by a local garage. On the plus side this car is 15 quid a month cheaper to insure. No idea how that works out, but I'll take it!

Not uncommon at least on a S/C. L/R do what they call a Anti Squeal Brake Pad now for the RRS2 whether it works or not I don't know or if they fit the RRS1 either. Funnily enough James French fitted new Rear Discs and Pads for me, genuine L/R parts which I supplied, never been any problem since. Never had any problems with the Fronts.

Cheers

How much were they, Col? I'll need to get the noise sorted fairly soon as it's so annoying if you've got the windows open. Did you just get them from eBay or something?

Hi,

These are the Rear Discs. Pads are LR025739 I think will double check number. I did get mine from main dealer via e-bay I think it was Marshalls £150.00 the lot, James French Charged £72.00 inc. vat to fit while I waited.

Worth giving Dan a call at Duckworth's see what he could do for you.
