Part Exchage price shock.

Is it me or does this trade in value seem unfair.

2015 (65) Autobiography 4900miles 87k new trade in price today 65k against a SVR for sale at 107k

Reason I see it as unfair is that's 25% loss in just over 6 months looking online at a list of similar cars they are selling for 75k still.

from some quick workings out a 65 plate car has lost 7% and a 15 plate 17% on average with similar specs and mileage.

If I accepted 65k that means dealer would make gross 10k or 15% on the used car sale if sold at 75k and a load of money on the SVR to.

Any thoughts or advise on this fellow users sometimes I think I'm in the wrong business and the hope of a SVR is looking further away after today Big Cry

That Dealer margin actually seems low to me.

Why not sell yours privately if you think you can get £75k for it? MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Autobiography base price was £77k IIRC. Yours was £87k because of options most of which unfortunately yield close to zero come resale time. However, I agree on the point that used ones are still selling for good money so why not yours? Try a few different dealers to see if you can get a better price. I found great variation in part exchange prices between local dealers when trading in my Black Edition. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Wales 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Lux Sumatra Black

If you look at the article and test report in this weeks/months What Car magazine, the current LR DSport model tested (as well as other makes) are dropping up to a third of their value in first year, except the more "special" models, or editions in short supply.
The advertised prices secondhand you see shown, are not the selling prices actually raised more often than not in Private sales after all, they don't come with the Warranty and other goodies you get from a LR dealer. Low mileage means nothing when you are trading in or selling, it's on resale some places charge more.
Most vehicles loose a great majority of their value in the first year or two. All the extras, people pay thousands for, make no difference in trade in and resale values when coming up for sale. They are just generally for your own entertainment and enjoyment, so enjoy, but dealers won't pay anything for them, reselling is another matter. Wink John

Do people really sell cars private at this level I think it's a risk.

Sounds like I'll either need to stick or to take the plunge if the price is what I should expect.

United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Fuji White

The stealers offer silly money for px's they know most folk just accept the offer,I'm in the same position with my 2012 that I paid 38500 for 11 month ago & they are now offering me 30-31,,the reason they do it is because most will buy these from dealers because of warranty & most get on finance so we have to take a big hit or wait till they are worth 10-12k when someone with cash can afford them.

United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Firenze Red

I'm sorry not to be more sympathetic, but surely you realised this when you purchased your respective vehicles? It is nothing new and has been the case for as long as I have been buying and selling vehicles, which is quite a while now. The only answer is to leave it for a month and then you can blame it all on Brexit!!!

It's interesting that if you go to WeBuyAnyCar and get a valuation, no account at all is taken of optional extras fitted to the car which confirms what others have said that they count for next to nothing come resale/part exchange time. They may make for an easier sale, other things being equal.

But, you are probably saying, "WBAC are rubbish and offer rock bottom". In my experience when I sold my Evoque, they offered more than the LR dealer. Truth is, P-Ex offers great convenience but you pay dearly for the privilege and the LR dealer has to factor in the risk, the finance cost while holding the car, the work required to make it saleable and make a profit too. The end result is that you pay and the more often you change your cars, the more often you will be taken to the cleaners.

It's true too that selling cars at this level privately is difficult and risky, as is buying. Still the depreciation the OP is looking at is nothing compared to the first owner of a friend's highly spec'd F-Type R - a hard to believe £40k over 4500 miles... And I thought it was only Aston Martins which did that.

What's certain is that when the time comes for my SVR to move on, the £1500 carbon engine cover is not going with it and will go on my garage wall instead, with no impact on the price I get. Mark

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

So which options would people pay to have on a used L494?

I know what I wouldn't pay for :-
contrast roof,
22" alloys,
1700w Meridian (I expect cars at this price to come with top of the range audio systems),
Opening Panoramic roof,
InControl Wifi or Apps,
Privacy Glass,
any of the "smart" tech like HUD, lane assist, parking assist of any sort,
full sized spare,
fancy paint protection/ finishes,
colour coded anything (99% of the time it devalues a car)
"Carbon Fibre" stick on trim (this is a car that weighs 2+ tonnes what difference to performance is stick on carbon fibre going to make).
Grand Black gloss interiors
Heated steering wheel (should be standard)
Fancy seating systems (5+2, cooling massaging seats included)
Heated rear seats (should be NCO or standard anyway)
Uprated braking systems
LED head light systems (BiXenon as standard are excellent).
Mood lighting.
Metallic Paint
Towing kit
3 or 4 zone "climate control"
Hybrid TV
Rear Seat Entertainment systems
"Stealth" Packs

What optional extras would I pay extra for on a used car:
Nothing, I would prefer to forgo any of them to have a good condition well looked after base car with a full main dealer service history. Many of the options specced at new can be very expensive to repair if they go wrong a few years out of warranty and as we all know things like SatNav and electronic systems go out of date rapidly and cost fortunes to update.

Which options would I like to see on a used RRS I might be considering buying?:
Blind spot warning system,
Road Sign recognition system
Approaching vehicle detection when reversing
Adaptive Cruise Control with forward alert
Heated steering wheel
Heated rear seating
Decent Audio
Privacy Glass
Plain alloy wheels fitted with decent sidewall tyres from one of the OEM suppliers
Space saver or full sized spare
BUT I can (and do) make do without most of them

What options do I have on mine:
Fixed Panoramic roof
22" Wheels
Privacy Glass
Front and rear stainless bash plates

As it was specced originally by the dealership as a car for their staff and I couldn't change the factory options, then I assume that they specced the items that are the most popular and least likely to loose value. My bash plates were a dealer fitted option that I specced and will remove from the car before I sell it on unless the buyer wants to buy them from me (they are useless for their intended job anyway as you have to remove them to access the recovery eye mounting points!). My alloys remain scuff free after 16 months and 11000 miles but I don't expect to get anything back from them when I sell the car even though I paid extra for them. When the time comes to fit new tyres all round then I'll consider buying a package of 20" wheels and tyres instead.

My current biggest concern isn't actually what the value of the options on a car is but what is the future for cars with large capacity diesel engines and the future "pollution" taxes that might cause the used value of all diesels to fall through the floor. I will certainly be looking for a 3.0ltr petrol engine or EV as my next car which will probably mean that there isn't Land Rover product on the market to suit me. 4WD isn't necessary although I would like AWD if possible (I have my Defender for when conditions require off-road, bad weather driving and I don't intend selling it for a long time) so a Tesla Series 3 or X would fit my requirements, as would a Jaguar XE or F Type (any of the F's, Pace or coupe or open top as they are all available with AWD as standard or an option). Currently considering a deposit on the forthcoming Tesla 3 AWD. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

I could try putting it on sale or return and will probably get a better return.

Another dealer has offered 2k more so a little better offer.

We buy any car won't offer more. I suppose I thought a dealer selling a new car may offer a slightly better trade in as they are getting a new order but doesn't work that way as they are different departments with different interests.

The only shocking part for me was residuals look so good but in truth are not. I'll have to make sure I get two posh coffees when I go to the dealer now to get my monies worth Smile

This is partly why I moved away from RRS to DS Sad

I tried to sell my 2 year old Black Edition on here for a steal but had no interest - WBAC and HR Owen online offered more than I could get px from dealers - £2-4k more Shocked

I work too hard to keep paying the increased prices and losing the massive depreciation Big Cry

Adding options just makes it worse I'm afraid - pay for them for your benefit but don't expect any return on them when you px Confused

Used to have no problem selling my pristine LRs but now everyone is seduced by the plush showrooms and credit - which is why the difference between px and forecourt is so big Banging Head Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

At my Brother's Showroom and Service Centre (which as explained before I don't use Embarassed ) he says they don't want the bother of trade-ins, unless the model they can easily resell, and deal with a company that buys up all their trade ins. As it happens, if you ask for trade in price you can virtually get the same price with no trade in and use their a Credit facilities. They also give a cash discount to those buyers that prefer to deal like that.
I'm just mentioning that they don't add anything onto the price for higher finished models, which quite shocked me.
The Glass's guide which the trade use, bares no resemblance you get in books or online from Parkers Guideand similar which generally overprice each level around 35%-40% more than the prices you get for trade in at any main dealers, and smaller selling garages. The price new cars drop in the first year can also Beas much as 40% but does depend on make and model and the demand for said cars.

Look at example price for my car at main dealers: MY2012 RRS HSE LUXURY SDV6 A +3 Packs. Dealer retail price from £31,750.00 to £35,940.00 Trade in to dealer: Trade in price to £24,750.00 Big Cry from this months Glass's trade guide.

Actually have a similar model as mine at my local LR dealer @ £38,250.00 Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter John
