I would like to think removing all that stuff is not necessary.

But it is a sod to see.

You need a good torch. Have someone turn the ignition on and see if you can see the rod moving

I have a workshop at home so I think I'm gonna get it cleared, get a heater, and some oil - what's best Neil? and have a crack myself
Geez I surely can't do any worse...
Is there anything on YouTube anyone know?

Thanks all for the help, its definitely the actuator (I assume I only have one?) so being on this forum has been great

What kind of use does your vehicle get? If it is all mostly short journeys and run on standard diesel or worse the budget supermarket stuff, perhaps the variable vanes themselves inside the turbo are partially seized with carbon deposits. You could try putting a few tankfulls of Shell V Max through it with some Miller's diesel cleaner added and taking it for a few long blasts to give it a clear out.

I have desisted from making the clichéd accusation of using red diesel in it as I'm sure you wouldn't dream of doing that. Laughing 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Cant hurt can it Paddi. At the moment I don't do too many journeys as I work seasonally - March to October.
I'm going to have the codes read again on Monday as I fear the turbo itself is going/gone and thus no amount of cleaning will do anything sadly Big Cry (will any high spec fuel do Paddi as there's not a shell near me)

Anyone know if the code for turbo failure is different to that of the actuator sticking? I know I'm clutching at straws but it was ok while I was working and travelling 20 odd miles a day.

Thanks
