Private Plate Swapping And Tax

Hi Guys,

Has anyone done the private plate transfer and road tax under the new scheme?

I am confused on what to do when!!!

So I have to remove my private plate from my Merc and get the new number, how long is that going to take???
Then I have to inform the DVLA that I am selling the car with its new registration. (Do I have to wait for the new V5 to turn up?)
This then tells them to stop the road tax?
At the same time, I need to transfer my provate plate to my RRS, how long will this take?
Can I tax the RRS or do I have to wait for the V5 with my private plate on???

Is there a corect order to do it in so I dont get ripped off or not leagle etc???

You need to remove the number from your Merc so that they issue the Merc with its old number and this takes about 7 -10 days.(this can sometimes be done online to make it quicker) Once you have the original number on the Merc (and the v5) you can sell it. The private number can then go onto your new purchase which again takes 7-10 days .

Cant help with the tax side of things as mine was new and included the road tax MY16 AUTOBIOGRAPHY Indus silver with some toys

When I did it last year, I am sure I just sent the form off (Before online was availabe) and the next day after sending it off, I just swapped my previous car with the Merc (Merc had old plates on, previos car had private on). When the V5s turned up, I just sent them off etc.
The RRS Land Rover dealer said this week "Do it online, bring the Merc with your plate on, the RRS will have your plate on also. We ask for a £250 deposit for the V5 so when you get it back for the Merc, send it to us and we refund your £250."
And seeing that I will tax the RRS on its old plate and if I do the transfer online, it should be done. If not, If they leave the old number on, its taxed, insured etc??

If you I sure under the old number, you'll need to pay the admin charge to have it changed to the new one as it won't flip over automatically. 2010 TDV8

I bought my RRS from dealer in July, dealer did the private plate retention online with me there to pay the £80 on my credit card. The V5 for my old car with original reg came thru within 5 days! The retention document took around 7 days. The delay for me was the V5 for the new RRS, it took 4 weeks to arrive, once it arrived I did the plate transfer online at https://www.gov.uk/put-registration-number...-you-start . tax disc refund came thru post automatically in a couple of weeks of sale as well. ____________________

Hi ya,

Did you drive away in the new RRS the same day then post back the V5 for your old RRS on new plate etc?

Whats the difference between putting the plate on retention while at the dealer than transfering it?

Cheers!

Carl

Hi Carl, yes, I posted the V5 for my old car back to the dealer the week after I collected. Had to put private plate on retention because can't transfer until the RRS V5 arrives. ____________________

Yeah thats what i though, think I did that last time.
What I dont get, is on the online part, its says you can put the plate on retention or transfer to a car you own or about to own????? That implies you wouldnt have the V5 as you dont currently own it???

Don't worry, the system is pretty easy and straightforward. I'm just going through it now.
1. Go online and apply for a retention certificate. This takes minutes and you will probably get immediate confirmation. Once that happens you can put the car back on the original plates (hope you kept them!)
2. Retention certificate and new V5C should arrive v soon. Mine took 3 days.
3. Go and buy your new car. As soon as you do this and complete all the buying selling then this triggers the tax rebate.
4. Send off part of the new cars V5C to get the ownership amended and also send them your retention certificate to put the personalised plate on the new car.
5. Once you get the new V5C back you can put the personalised plates on the new car.

I think that's about it, but others may have more info. Anyway, no delays involved, but you may need to wait a day or two to put your personalised plates on the new car.

Don't forget, the rear plate holder on. RRS is a different size from normal, so you may need to get a new rear plate made up.

Hi ya,

Yeah i thought it was like that.
Any idea how long you have to fit your original plates back on your selling car? I binned the old ones and the dealer is happy to make the new plates and fit them after I drop the car off.

The dealer is going to make the RRS plates up and leave them in the boot for me to fit when I get my V5 back etc.

No idea. They do recommend you do it asap, but presumably they know it may take a few days to get new plates made up. It seems as though personalised plates are just a facade and the original plates remain valid 'underneath' so I doubt you would have too much trouble if stopped. Speeding tickets would still find their way to you. Personally, I'd be more than happy to run on old plates for a week or three, but we v seldom see the police around here.

Why not get the dealer to fit the new plates asap to the car you are selling? That way you stand a better chance of getting the revised V5C back before doing the change over with him?

Hi,

Spoke to the DVLA on the phone. They said if you do it online, you still have to wait for the retention certificate to come in the post before you change to the old number (Or new if old not available) This should take 5 days.
So If I do this monday and and take the car to the dealer Saturday, the plate should be mine on retention. I am then awaiting the V5 to come in my name with new (Old) reg. The dealer has asked for a £250 retainer that will be refunded when I send them the V5. (Thats if its not already come)
Then I can send the RRS V5 off with my retention certificate to transfer in to my name and my reg put on it at the same time.

I'm not sure the guy at the DVLA knows what he's talking about. Here is a scan of the document that I was sent/downloaded immediately I had done the retention thingy online. In other words, you can switch back to the old plates immediately, or just wait until you get the new V5C. Personally, I'd do the retention thingy asap and then run the old plates until you drop the car off.
