You need to remove the number from your Merc so that they issue the Merc with its old number and this takes about 7 -10 days.(this can sometimes be done online to make it quicker) Once you have the original number on the Merc (and the v5) you can sell it. The private number can then go onto your new purchase which again takes 7-10 days .

When I did it last year, I am sure I just sent the form off (Before online was availabe) and the next day after sending it off, I just swapped my previous car with the Merc (Merc had old plates on, previos car had private on). When the V5s turned up, I just sent them off etc.

I bought my RRS from dealer in July, dealer did the private plate retention online with me there to pay the £80 on my credit card. The V5 for my old car with original reg came thru within 5 days! The retention document took around 7 days. The delay for me was the V5 for the new RRS, it took 4 weeks to arrive, once it arrived I did the plate transfer online at https://www.gov.uk/put-registration-number...-you-start . tax disc refund came thru post automatically in a couple of weeks of sale as well. ____________________

Hi Carl, yes, I posted the V5 for my old car back to the dealer the week after I collected. Had to put private plate on retention because can't transfer until the RRS V5 arrives. ____________________

Don't worry, the system is pretty easy and straightforward. I'm just going through it now. 1. Go online and apply for a retention certificate. This takes minutes and you will probably get immediate confirmation. Once that happens you can put the car back on the original plates (hope you kept them!) 2. Retention certificate and new V5C should arrive v soon. Mine took 3 days. 3. Go and buy your new car. As soon as you do this and complete all the buying selling then this triggers the tax rebate. 4. Send off part of the new cars V5C to get the ownership amended and also send them your retention certificate to put the personalised plate on the new car. 5. Once you get the new V5C back you can put the personalised plates on the new car. I think that's about it, but others may have more info. Anyway, no delays involved, but you may need to wait a day or two to put your personalised plates on the new car. Don't forget, the rear plate holder on. RRS is a different size from normal, so you may need to get a new rear plate made up. |

No idea. They do recommend you do it asap, but presumably they know it may take a few days to get new plates made up. It seems as though personalised plates are just a facade and the original plates remain valid 'underneath' so I doubt you would have too much trouble if stopped. Speeding tickets would still find their way to you. Personally, I'd be more than happy to run on old plates for a week or three, but we v seldom see the police around here.
