Does the auto box learn driving style

Hi everyone, it's me again Laughing

So another searching question, does the autobox get used to your driving style? This is my first auto, the D3 was manual.
I just seem to find that the car revs higher before changing up, or revs more than I would have allowed the manual D3 to have done, I would have changed gear sooner.

I am also finding that despite the D3 and the sport having the same size engine 2.7 I am not getting the same sort of mileage per gallon from it. I am getting About 20-22 around town and about 24-25 on the motorway doing about 70mph

Is this normal sort of mileage? What do you fine fellows get?

The auto box does learn your driving style, so drive like an old granny for a while and the box will be less aggressive. Although there will be times when you may be swearing at it to go at a roundabout or junction Thumbs Up MY10 3.0 HSE Santorini Black, Ivory Premium & extended leather, privacy, paddles, diamond turned alloys, Ipod lead that charges, tasmods, rrsport.co.uk stickers

I've found that if it's holding too low a gear, adding a bit more throttle for a second then backing off again will trigger the change up. Thumbs Up RRS gone

i have noticed since i got mine that it has started to perk up with the gear changes, a dealer who serviced told me that the gear box would adapt to my style. He also told me to use the command shift as this would help it learn???

As i said it does seem to have perked up!

this is true, the gearbox learns, at least for me, a D4 owner 2010 MY TDV6 245, the gearbox give me a clunk! in the past when i did downshifts, and this was anoying me!!! and after some time (two or three times i drove the car, in the same day, more or less 50 km) using command shift and forcing it up and down shifts it goes perfect!! no clunks!!
Thumbs Up

try it!! you dont loose anything!!

Gentlemen, this is called the Adaptive Shift Strategy (ASIS)

The ASIS system is a new feature on automatic transmissions. With the TCM linked via the CAN bus to other vehicle systems, signals are received which can allow the TCM to calculate the way in which the vehicle is being driven. The type of signals include the following:

Longitudinal and lateral acceleration
Engine speed
Engine torque
Oil temperature
Accelerator pedal position
Wheel speed.

Using these signals, additional transmission control can be obtained. The TCM can calculate when the vehicle is cornering, all wheels are gripping, the driver is braking or if the driver is accelerating. This is the conventional 'Adaptive' transmission control. ASIS uses this system but adds the continuous adaptation of the gear changes to the individual driving style of the driver.

Another example of Landrover outsmarting itself to our detriment. I normally have a relaxed driving style and because the gearbox has learnt this I have been caught out in some urgency situations where the gearbox would not change down when I require it - like overtaking etc. This is a dangerous setup and has no doubt caused accidents when the car would not provide the performance required of it.

Why do makers think their cars know better than the drivers.

I hardly think it's dangerous.. If you know you're going to overtake, get the car ready by using command-shift.. Do you think people in manual cars think they're dangerous when they are in a hi gear??? Rolling Eyes

Does the car not have a kick down - must admit never had to use it in the range rover, but in the Jag XF which had a similar transmission if you depress the accelerator fully then press down harder it shifts down a gear. 3.0 SDV6 HSE Dynamic, Corris Grey with contrast Santorini Black Panoramic Roof, lunar interior, privacy glass, upgraded Meridian system, cooled 18 way front seats, heated steering wheel, adaptive xenons, large screen wash bottle.

Not a problem with Landrover, but with ZF who make the boxes for many manufacturers including BMW etc. Their software controls the box and this is integrated into the cars systems. In my experience it works well and using the kick down gets the box to drop a couple of cogs when you need to shift in a hurry

I agree that kickdown does occur - but when the car decides it is time to change down not when the driver wants it - usually there is, to quote an old military term, a 'pause of two marching paces" before anything happens. 07MY RRS TDV6

We have auto lights, auto wipers etc. There's no escaping these things. You'd be surprised how many decisions your car does for you while you're driving it. Smile

By the way Garry, even without the Adaptive Shift Strategy, your gearbox is already an auto and it is changing gears in a predetermined way. Wink Malaysia Boleh!
