Bi-Xenon headlight switching for Europe.

On the 2010 MY I see LR says to remove the headlight units to reach the shutter lever to alter the dip beam for European driving.

Anybody managed to reach the levers with the hassle of removing the grill and light units.

Bit of a pain to do on a ferry !! - or leave well alone and then 50% legal i.e. Ok in UK, illegal in France or illegal UK, OK France.

Yes Chris you might be right; although as it is all held in by clips it should be easy enough - but not mid-trip.

With light summer nights its fine as I'm unlikely to need headlights on the UK legs and the French are a bit hotter in dishing out the on-the-spot.

Easy job, takes ten mins max , do it while in queue for ferry, the grill pops out if you give it a yank, then thread a piece of ribbon under the leaver to undo the lights, again pull upwards, it is tight so you can't get the leverage if you use your hands, then switch the leaver on the back of the light.
Then it is just the reverse to put it back in, the slide clip is easier to push down than pull up, which is why the ribbon is a must!

Thanks Dave

I'll give it 'a yank' and have a dry run at the weekend.

I might try to bend a bit of welding rod as a special tool to push and pull the levers - two chances !

I was told you had to take the whole unit out,on the basis that knowing my luck I would probably drop at least 1 I thought £50 to do it twice was a bargain. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

I have the auto dimming headlights on my 2011 MY, and I noticed that in the setup on the steering wheel I can change the side from left to right depending upon what country I'm driving in.

Anybody know if this also switches the above?

You are all mad... I have taken the RRS & The FFRR over to France loads and never have i dipped or messed with the lights. All the French care about is that you have a warning triangle and a reflective jacket and spare bulbs.
Im driving to France next week, I wont be altering my lights. Smile

it is easy to switch over, but I do keep a set of UK headlights to put in the car in for when I'm in the UK. Got them from Tim when he bought the FFRR.
My one complaint in this department is that being a european version RRS I have no MPH on the dash, unlike the UK RRS which has both MPH and km/h. Even my 2004 MG ZT could switch between MPH and km/h as well as being able to switch the headlight beam pattern. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

It is very easy to do, as codfather explains above. I have done it twice, but then indeed there is the autodimming function which does exactly that. Vadim A.

Foxy - You might be right I could be "mad".

Getting caught or not is not the issue I reckon its always a good idea to stay legal because in my experience if an accident occurs that's caused by a 'local' the cops usually try and find something - anything - that will make your motor illegal - which also gives your insurers a way out - very sticky!

Since I've driven many thousands of miles in many countries on two wheels, 4 wheels and 16 wheelers with all sorts of race cars on board - I was just as interested in not dazzling the poor b-st--d coming t'other way.

Solution for anyone interested. Don't have any power turned on as Xenon's use high voltage.

It is possible to get at the lefthand light as there is sufficient space to remove the large round rubber cap and the shutter lever is visible about your index finger's depth to the right of the shiny square Xenon bulb holder. Once you've felt it once the second time is dead easy.

The righthand unit is not so easily accessible as there is a large main loom connector just above the rubber seal.

To solve the issue I drilled a hole about 1cm diameter in the flat top of the soft plastic light unit just in front of the main black steel crossmember (put some vaseline'grease on the drill, cut slowly and the bits of shavings won't fall in the light- not that they will do harm). The hole size isn't important but you will need to have a rubber grommet to fit it. I then made a 'tool' using about a 15-20cm by 1cm strip of rigid plastic that will fit in through the hole (not metal because of the electrics!). Up about 0.5 cm from one end of this strip I cut a lengthwise slot about 1cm by 0.2cm. It is possible to see the level through the hole and by passing the plastic strip in the hole and slipping the slot over the end of the lever you can move it up or down to push and pull the headlight shutter lever up and down as you wish.

Once done flip the plastic 'tool' off the shutter lever -fit the rubber grommet and it's all water and weather proof again. Swicthing to left or righthand drive is now a simple 10 second job. A rubber glove will keep you hand clean when doing the LH unit.

i would like to know the answer to this too! does changing the setting just affect the auto-dimming feature, or does it adjust the actual lights too? i suspect the former, but how cool would the latter be! ============

Spain

Not a problem for Euopean LHD RR Sports as the head lamps only dip straight down, unlike the UK when they dip down AND to the left. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.
