You'll need a decent sized boot for wheel & tyre collecting, not your teeny weeny RRS one!! There are advantages to driving a Pikeymobile, you can get 10 in there with all the seats down! Whistle

OK, I'm storing a set of winter wheels for the first time so I've been trawling the internet on this subject, and using my brain a bit too. Here's my conclusion...

All tyre manufacturers I've come across say to store tyres away from direct daylight, solvents and heat sources. They say that tyres on rims should be properly inflated and laid flat (or hung up) and tyres without rims should be stored vertically, on their treads, but should be rotated every few weeks.

That's all well and groovy, but why? In the case of tyres on rims I have not been able to find any reason for laying them horizontally other than to avoid getting flat spots. Tyres on vehicles laid up for the winter should also be lifted off the ground for this reason. This is old folk wisdom.

Applying a bit (a little bit) of my enormous brain, I have concluded the following:

Stored for a few months, it is extremely unlikely that a properly inflated tyre will develop a flat spot unless it is attached to a car at the time. Compared to the stresses a tyre suffers when it is having to support a vehicle, when it is off the vehicle those stresses are almost nil. There is no visible bulge at the bottom as there is when it is on the vehicle.

HOWEVER, ...if you come to fit your winter or summer tyres and find one of them has lost all its pressure and gone flat, then that tyre may well be permanently damaged, whereas if it had been stored horizontally then you'd probably get away with it as it will not have distorted under its own weight in the same way.

So, as I don't have a place I can easily store them layed down flat, I shall store them vertically and not worry, but I will put an extra bit of presure in them and check those pressures from time to time over the summer. While checking the pressures I can also rotate the wheels. It's easy enough to put a note in my diary to do that five-minute chore once a month.

I'm a cautious kind of person when it comes to these things and I feel very comfortable with my compromise.

Thanks everyone for all the thoughts on the subject.
