For car tyres as long as youre carefull, dont scratch bash or dent your rims and load them evenly and up no more than about 4 or 5 tall then youre likely to be fine.

Much of the guidance is aimed at protecting the weakest part of the tyre which is the sidewall and also preventing unnecessary loads on the wheel which could lead to cracks, and remembering that heavy weight could distort the sidewall if left for long periods..

On my pre war Rolls I used to have to ensure the car was jacked up in the winter to prevent flat spots and that the tyres were covered to prevent any degradation due to UV.

The chances of a flat spot from a tyre off the car properly inflated with no weight on it being flat spotted is pretty well minimal......and in case anyone asks Ive just asked a friend of mine who designs aircraft under-carriages and wheel assemblies and he agrees with me.

So this is you answer oldcro, let them rabble on about aviation tyres all night it doesn't concern you because your question was which is the best way to store your winter wheels and tyres Laughing Thumbs Up

I have been storing my 20" summer wheels horizontally in my garage on a pallet and was not sure if I was going to put them back on due to kerbing issue compared to 19" winter set on at present Shocked

Like the look of this but only for rims up to 225mm? I have 275 for summer and 255 for winter so no good Big Cry

What about these for vertical storage http://www.johnscross.co.uk/products/Fiamm...Spots.html Question Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Consensus seems to be flat on rims and vertical for tyres Thumbs Up Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Absolutetly, flat is wisest practical solution for wheels and tyres.

As its only six month periods the most important things are..
1. to increase the pressure slightly
2. Insert thick corrugated cardboard sheets between wheels, (helps trap any moisture)
3. Make sure wheels and tyres are clean and totally dry before storing
4. Conditions are free from damp and and condensation
5. They are out of direct sunlight; best if it is dark from most of the time.

You should also check for and repair any damage to the 'varnish' on allow wheels, exposued alloy will soon develop anoxide coating, especiall on wheel centres that mate to the hub face.

2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black

i put this question firmly in the same box as "should I fill me tyres with nitrogen?"

i.e. there are lots of boring ways to answer it but in reality it wont make any difference

my experience is flying as a passenger on lots of planes to lovely places all over the world, and stacking off-road tyres in my garage Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter ============

2007 TDV8 HSE - superb car and very reliable

2012 - dearly departed, sadly missed.. to return in late 2013 with a new TDV8!

I'd have thought trying to make sure my £800 worth of tyres were stored correctly was worth seeking advice. Although of all the answers received only one has qualified as boring so far.

Geez - what about the set on the car. They are subject to such extreme daily abuse, without any shelter, love or mollycoddling.

I am so worried about this that I now need to go and lie down ..... RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

I'm with you Smarticus, It seems these tyre things we all have on our cars are really fragile and clearly not fit for purpose! Shocked For the safety of me and my family I'm having a set of these fitted....Despite the obvious "Flat Spots" I'm assured they are fine Whistle

OOps, Sorry. Ummmm about 20 hours in De havilland Chipmunks whilst in Air Training Corps, 40 hours in Cessna 152 Aerobat whilst gaining PPL which I ran out of money during and stopped after failing my Nav Flight Test by getting a wee bit too close to the US Airforce base at Upper Heyford (they were very nice, politely requested we leave their airspace and didn't shoot us down.. which considering it was the USAF was rather lucky)! Embarassed ..... Oh and I did check my tyres on my pre flights and they were definately round & black.... Chock's Away Whistle 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Brilliant Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter However must tell you about my experience with a jockey, very very cold morning and as i had to work the line on this day i was sent to see off a Dominie, after doing all the checks and listening to the scream of the engines being revved i was suddenly summoned to the door by the pilot, imagine my suprise when he said "bloody cold this morning old boy, i think we are frozen to the pan" i do not think he was to happy with my reply which was "no sir i think a signal from you to take the chocks away may help" Shocked Shocked

Why should England tremble!!!!
