CARPUTER /CARPC install from the USA

Hey guys,

I just installed an EEE PC using a GNET video bypass to hook up to the OEM screen.

EEE PC with 4GB RAM, SDHC, XP nLite, RoadRunner, Elite skin.
USB GPS Holux M1000
VGA-Composite AVMedia adaptor
Keyboard is Logitech Nova Mini

I did the install (temp, I gotta hard wire the electrics). I can confirm it looks good. Pictures will tell you..

I tested the install with a $25 SD Card/USB mp4, divx, mp3 player.

(A bit of 80s humor with Rick Astley to show off to my friends)

I then popped my eeepc into the cargo bay. Perfect fit. Literally perfect.

Here is a cheap $25 Chinese player. Plays mp3, pictures. movie and fits in the cooler just fine. Got it from Dealextreme. The Gnet has multiple AV inputs so I have this, my carpc, my ipod/iphone, and soon rear cam.

Thats a bit different than what he did. I'm not sure if thats the smartest way to go about that. Its like reinventing the wheel in completely different way.

The best way and easiest way is just to purchase an actual carputer, whuch just plugs in and thats its. There's no messing around with soldering, circuitry, etc. Just re-route some RCA's and you're done. Is about a 1 hour install and they're turn key systems. They come loaded with all the software, hardware etc.

yes but nice to be able to use the touch screen to control the carputer. i would do the usb/touch screen mod regardless

you can use the touch screen, thats what the carputer is all about. Everything is pre-programed and is setup to work with touch screens exclusivley. The stuff Chrono posted is an eee PC not a carputer. The carputer is what you want to buy and they're only a few hundred dollars.

How'd you hook up the audio? From what I understand, the GNET doesn't do audio?

Also, do you have heat issues with the computer unit in that area?

i think your wrong dude, the only way to get access to the touch screen control on the RRS is through the mod i mentioned earlier.

He isn't using the GNET, he is using the newest and best Video on Nav module he bought from me. Yes, there is a built in FM modulator.

I get them straight from the manufacturer. Please let me know if anyone is interested.

Yep, I got it from FAT_RRS. The GVIF-07 (similar to GNET) has 3 AV inputs, RGB and Camera in and 1 AV Out. I am not using the FM Transmitter. It is behind the seat and I route the AV OUT to the AUX In on the back of the console.

FAT_RRS has a great price and it was easy to hookup. The EEEPC has no heat issues that I am aware of. I have used it 2 hours at the most. There is no hard drive. It is SSD Solid State Drive.

I will look into the touch screen hack.

Greetings.. What an amazing idea! Thank you to those who have put forth the effort to bring this to fruition. For someone lacking the technical skills and A/V understand can you possibly detail exactly what's needed going the eee PC route please?

I currently have an R500 SSD Toshiba laptop and am thinking about building some sort of "dock" in the LR3. This way I can access the full laptop with all my data on it since I use it while I travel and at my desk with a docking station. My thought is that I can use this and run the cables/adaptors to a single spot and tackle it that way.

Thoughts? --
