Mystery Solved. It was a crook wheel bearing (front left).
The service people were actually very good. They picked up on handbrake noise and cleaned and adjusted rather than replacing the mechanism. ...

Regardless of tyre, i always go for the max load pressure recommendation. Slightly hard ride, much better handling and wear.
