Tanzania Safari advice

My son's school is planning a school trip to Tanzania next year, the kids will all be about 11 years old. They will be going for about 10 days in February 2008 and will visit an orphanage and go on safari. I'm a little worried about the safety in Tanzania and was wondering if any other forum members can give me some advice. Should I let him go or not. Are there any other things I should worry about such as anti malaria drugs etc? 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Health advice for Tanzania here:

http://www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk/Country/Tanzania.html

Your GP or NHS Direct should be able to confirm any of these if you're unsure of accuracy (but they are the same as the jabs I had to have went we went to Mauritius, so probably correct).

Tanzania's a brave destination for a school trip. When I was 11 we had to make to do with a trip to La Rochelle! Very Happy I'd have the same reservations as you - I'm sure it'll be a high value trip in educational/social awareness terms, but you never know when these countries can be a little unstable.

Difficult decision. Confused

Suggest the FCO website VA - biased and over cautious but I use it as a start point for overseas jobs... something obvious, fco.gov.uk or similar then travel advice...

I have somebody who works for me from Tanzania and also a guy who has just had his honeymoon over there. I will ask there opinion. Do you know what part of Tanzania they are going.

I've travelled a fair bit in east africa, if it were my son I'd say go for it. Yes they will need a bit of common sense, but the adventure will be awesome for a lad of that age. He'd be more at risk going to London.

I'm technically a resident of Tanzania, and its probably the safest country in East Africa, so it shouldn't be a problem - within limits of common sense like anywhere else in the world. Its also the friendliest country Ive been to in Africa as far the locals go.

Your son will probably go to the north of the country around Moshi and Arusha, which is a well beaten tourist track and is almos entirely tourist focussed so there will be plenty of facilities for him and he won't be out of place or attract any untoward attention.

Malaria medicine is a must, tbh.
