I suppose they are only telling us that the pads need changing because they are getting close to needing it, if we chose not to then that's up to us, but if like you there is about 5k left and you are getting 20k on a new set, then in theory by not having them done yet you are saving £83.75 Thumbs Up some of my Previous cars

On our D3 we did about a further 300 after the brake wear light came on. In that time the discs got badly scored and the dealer said they needed replaced. I actually think the brake wear indicator sensor itself might have damaged the disc, so if you hear any metallic sounds from the brakes when rolling forward, suggest you change the pads asap.... RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

On my service last week they said the pads were getting near needing replacement and that I should wait for the sensors to raise the alarm. TDV6 - gone
TDV8 - gone

I suppose a lot depends on how often you want or can be at the service dept too. I had mine done at the 1st service because it would have been inconvenient to go back a few weeks later to have them done.

Well I tend to brake kind of hard so I needed new pads at 13,000 miles. And they're just starting to squeak again at 20,100 miles.

Out of interest - when anyone has had them done - all 4 together or fronts or rears, also which go first the fronts or is it pretty even?

My first change so unaware as yet...

I had all 4 done, but fronts were much more worn (fairly understandably, they take the brunt of stopping 2.5t of metal) Very Happy

I would try and get the pads replaced before the light comes on. Otherwise youl have to pay for a new sensor Another 20 quid or so, replace rears while your on.

Should get two sets of pads to a set of rotors

Hi Bod surely you get the sensor wires when you buy a set of pads Question and why replace the rears at the same time if they dont wear at the same rate.

And Welcome to the site some of my Previous cars

I replaced my front and rear pads with Greenstuff when fitting Rossini front discs. Didn't let LR anywhere near the car.., why pay £100+vat when Oily Joe around the corner does it for £30ph cash!!! Thumbs Up

The pads were the original first set from new when removed, front had worn much more than rear. Managed to re-use the sensors, no problem. My LR Parts man told me on the hush-hush NOT to use LR pads on straight replacements and go for Mintex instead which are superior (LR=Ferodo, I think?). Question

This is now getting too technical for a moron like me so I'll quit while I'm ahead! Cool

just had mine changed at 36,000 km (22,500 miles) There was no light on the dash yet but the service said I was down to the last mm. I don't know if I should believe him but I think the mileage is about right anyway RRS TDV6 (gone)

I had mine done on Monday - needed them for a work run south... down to barely more than 1mm on front with warning light flickering. It looks like the sensor contact was just about starting to score the front disks, I have the pads in the boot to examine more closely out of interest but I'd now advise if the light is on get them done without trying to get remaining mileage from them - not worth the risk of scored disks and increased ££...

Im just wondering guys...

Do discs squeak if they're cold or wet?

On the point can you change them yourselves on the RRS? I remember someone said you cant do 4x4's yourselves because the jacks arent big enough to be able to lift the car? And you dont get a dealer stamp when changing discs anyway do you?

Sorry for the rather silly questions I've always had my mechanic just say this needs doing etc etc. Michael Potter
