Tyre wear

I notice some posts here about uneven tyre wear, but I am concerned about tyre life in general.

Not all of us a flushed with money so I can just make it into the bottom end of the RRS range. I currently have a Disco 2 and we don't like the Disco 3.

However, my Disco did 56k miles on its first set of tyres and is approaching 25k on its second set which are still like new. My Terrano did 56k on its first set and went back at 90k with a part worn set. This meant that both cars offset their astronomical servcing costs with low tyre maintenance.

However posts here seem to suggest that I will almost need a set of tyres every service!

What are you getting out of your normally driven RRS?

Martin

Hi Martin,

Welcome to the forum - the mileage your used to is amazing - I'd be happy with anything over 20k myself - only done 1700miles at the moment, so cant give any true indication, however I'm sure others will give you a better insight shortly

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

Hi Martin and welcome - 1st, don't worry about coming in at the bottom of the range, I did the same thing for the same reason when I bought my TD6 RR, it was an SE. If you want one and that is the what you can afford, go for it. Afterall it is the same engine and gearbox it's only some toys and the leather that are missing - doesn't spoil the drive of the car and you have less things to go wrong too!

Tyre life - my Sport is a TDv6SE, it's done 15000 miles in 18 months and has done some of those offroad. When mine went in recently for an ECU upgrade the dealer also did a "prewinter" check and the tyres came back with 5mm all round except the spare which had more than 6mm................... it also came back with one tyre with a nail in the edge of the side wall where it joins the tread so I had to buy a new tyre anyway. There are other RRS's on here with much higher mileages and nobody seems to have required new tyres yet other than when they have changed up to larger wheels.
My V8 Disco 1 ran to 66000 miles on it's original AvonTurbospeeds but since that car I haven't kept one that long that I have found out what the terminal tyre mileage is
So for it! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Hi Martin

I've been blasting around for over 12 mths in my supercharged & now covered 12000miles. the front ones are wearing out much quicker and I have approx 5 - 6mm left on them , so there not too bad. I have recently bought 2 spare tyres [ locally ] & picked the pair up for £60 so tyres shouldn't have to cost you the earth.

United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Autobiography Stornoway Grey

Hi Martin,

I've had my Supercharged for just over 14 months now and done 26,000 miles. I measured my tyres last weekend and although the shoulders are looking a little worn, they are all still at 5mm of tread.

For such a heavy car and the fact I DO throw it about at times, I'm surprised at how long they are lasting.

Plus, if you keep an eye out you can buy tyres second hand on eBay for little money. MDP and I have both bought a set of 2 20" tyres, he paid £60 for the pair, I paid £50 for a pair this weekend. They may be 'slightly worn' but who cares when they are that cheap!! L319 D4 HSE

I had a puncuture in my rear tyre on Friday. Whilst it was being repaired the garage pointed out that both front tyres were worn out on the inside! The tracking must be out and they look knackered!! A bit Censored off as I had just had the car serviced and the Stealer never noticed??

Bought a set of 20" Stormers with Toyo's off Ebay the same day so should be ok for a few months..... Laughing Just aqquired a Silver HSE. Also have a TVR Tuscan

Yugoslavia 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black

I just changed mine at 34,000 KM / 22,000 miles. They looked ok but when taken off they were looking dodgy on the inside (side wall, as well as tread). They would have survived another maybe 3,000 KM but it's winter so I didn't want to take a chance. RRS TDV6 (gone)
RRS TDV8 HSE(gone, burned out)

An on the quiet tip

LR have recently revised geometry setting for the Sport and if you have uneven wear on the tyres within the first 7k I would recommend you talk nicely to your dealer, LR are currently being quite pliable when it comes to a monetary donation towards resetting up the vehicles geometry and replacement tyres.

Not sure if this applies to markets outside the UK though
