My cracked manifold only manifested itself when under load. Took the Indy ages to diagnose with a pukka Snap On smoke test kit.

They thought they’d solved the issue doing the egr o rings as the smoke disappeared under idle, however, taking it up the road it checked out black smoke again.

Being a decent Indy, they only charged me for doing the job once and not putting the top half back together and dismantling again.

When mine split it started with only happening under heavy acceleration. Then progressed to light acceleration.

This was when I initially had the RP message:

This was when I replaced it:

Went from having to look for it to oh my lord. Also had the inlet manifold gasket go brittle on the other side which leaked oil pretty bad. I think I’m going to buy the aluminum inlet manifolds, aluminum coolant outlet and do the whole batch over a weekend. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Santorini Black

Thanks all. Am still struggling to see any particular oil leak (mist or otherwise) as there is generally oil everywhere (only diesels I've ever owned is this one and the 09 version I upgraded from so don't know how much oil is normal for these dirty engines).

Am thinking I'm going to have to try to make a DIY smoke machine and pressurise the system to about 25psi to see if it's more evident - am reluctant to just buy the heads and install them just in hope.

Any suggestion for DIY builds are welcome. Will let you know how I get on.

Oil everywhere? Not exactly normal without things leaking. Where is the oil? If it’s at the front of the engine under the throttle body your throttle body could be split at a seam and blowing oil out there. Mine did this. Took a while to find since everything looked okay, but there was always oil at the front of he engine even after cleaning it.

If nothing is leaking it should be pretty dry and clean. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Turbo hose leak and egr o ring were culprits on mine.

Then the manifold.

I’d get it in to an Indy. You could be chasing your tail on a DIY.

Where are you based ?
