Finally managing to get some time to sort a few jobs on the list.

I did the power steering fluid change in May which went well and certainly needed doing.

I checked the ACE reservoir and for the life in me looks like Red ATF in there - so want to swop out ?

I believe it’s meant to be same spec as power steering fluid

So any method to replacing this fluid, I’ve looked at the set up but drawn a blank as to how to approach this, having learned lessons early on these cars I’m better to ask first than risk tinkering and Causing a cock up👍

I’m also going to ask if there’s any risk in new fluid going in and swelling seals etc with new v old fluids

There is a small filter ..some where under the rear in the valve block which can be replaced ..dont know if removing it will let it drain.

Read about that and seen the filter and recon I can get at that and replace it easily enough.

Just lack of info on how the valve block actually works and how you can flush the system out.

I’m going to assume the valve block controls front and rear operation therefore the valves need a signal to open up otherwise default position is closed so no fluid transfer

If I’m correct I have no idea how you can circulate the fluid around the system???

I do love these vehicles 🤬

All advice more than welcome and I’ll post any pictures once/if I manage to do this job

Just removeing the filter will only drain about a teaspoon full.

Yup that’s what I’ve read too, I’m confident in changing filter as appears limited risk of air entering system which I’m assuming is self bleeding.

Following with interest, I've had the filter and fluid on my eBay watch list for a while now as it's one of those jobs I've been meaning to do. My plan was to change the filter then periodically change the contents of the reservoir for fresh fluid.

I went to do my filter and fluid recently




Ebay filter is to big so I cleaned the old filter out and put it back in fluid was pretty clean as iv flushed it a few times

I change my ACE fluid and filter every two years. After removing the valve block plug use an M6 thread screw to pull out the filter and put a new one in. Then use a syringe to empty the ACE reservoir and fill it with new fluid - start the vehicle and run it for a few minutes, then repeat the process about 5 times. I use Castrol Transmax Z ATF. I also use it for my power steering fluid which I change at the same time

Cracking thanks for the advice, was tempted to see if I could flush it through like my power steering but as soon as I figured out how the valve block worked thought I might have to gradually dilute the old fluid with new.

Just one question do you simply start the car and leave it running or do you need to drive it to encourage the ACE system to work 😁

If I understand the L/R w/shop manual correctly, the oil does not circulate the system until the engine is running and the vehicle is moving to open the valves and move steering etc. so just changing the oil in the reservoir it is not doing much really, if you do not move the vehicle and simply change the oil several times in the reservoir you are just changing the same oil again, which is why you need some way of opening the valves in the valve block, i.e. £500.00 L/R special tool The reservoir holds 0.4 Liters the whole system holds 2.4 Liters.

I thought as much - will need to “drive it like I stole it “ 😳👌 to encourage circulation otherwise valves must remain closed .

I’m guessing it might take a few more changes if system holds that much and reservoir only holds 400ml

Either way I know what I’m up against now

Those quantities are what is stated in the manual so assume they are about right, would have thought by now someone may have worked out a way of tricking the valves to open while stationary and use some sort of pressure bleeder tool. Hopefully someone may respond who has managed it, would be very useful I members I think

Ordered same fluid as used on the power steering as I’ve checked and spec is same 👍

Now I know the filters a metal mesh I can see no reason why it cannot be flushed/ cleaned with alcohol or brake cleaner - let me know if I’m wrong 🤔

Plan is to clean filter then replace, empty reservoir , fill with clean fluid, run car around Italian style 😁😳

Empty reservoir- rinse and repeat a few times and see what colour I can get on the fluid

Will post update on method 😁

I don’t think it’s possible to trick the valves in the central block to open without the proper diagnostic equipment 😤
