Alternator change 2010 sport

Trying to change alternator on sport , 2010
3.0l

All the guides and help videos showing every fan cowling apart from mine , got all side covers off drivers side also plate front bottom just struggling to remove cowling to get to fan

Any ideas anyone seems to be bolted to radiator all way round

Any guidance thanks

Can you not get to it from underneath via the smaller front cover ? Mine is a 2009 2.7 ..nothing like what is in the photograph Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

3 litre is different.
You can remove the section of the shroud. It clips on but is a cow to get it off.
Once you have it off then you have the joy of getting the fan off... have you got the correct holding tool and spanner?
Apparently then it is easy Smile

I spent 2 days trying to change mine from underneath and couldnt get it done... I sin=mply couldnt get to the main battey connection on the back of the alternator and the cable was so short it wouldnt allow the alternator to be moved forward enough to get to the nit to undo the cable so it defeated me but ended up not needing to be replaced anyway.

Yes seems very tight in there, what was problem with yours if not alternator

Faulty alternator ?

Check battery voltage with engine at a fast idle ...1-2000 rpm should be 14v ish.
Is the warning light ON...check at night . faults show as abnormal behaviour. Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

Yes got charging system fault on dash
When it came on just drove back home and parked up so lucky

All errors came up and dash etc and cut out on way back home

Went to start once back in drive, and nothing, jumped car starts and runs for 4-5 mins then cuts out dead battery

Changed battery, will work for couple of days then same dead battery

So I assume it’s alternator, have tried jumper cable from block to negative on battery just in case bad earth
But still the same


Will try revs at 2000 and check voltage at battery later

Mine was more related to some faults showing up which "could" have been related to Alternator / low charge rate but after abondoning the alternator change and having it checked by a Battery place all was well.
I still have the fault lights (3 Amigos) but I have 14.5v showing pretty much all the time when running on mine. I have a voltmeter as part of a dual USB mount where the lighter used to be.
Fault finding electrics in these things can be challenging Smile

Did you reset the BMS when you changed Batteries? Make sure you check all the ground connections etc... Faulty grounds can cuase a myriad of issues.

If the cable was tight you could have cut it to get the alternator out and then extended it so you could connect it before replacement.

Well you obviously havent been underneath a 3 litre V6 Range Rover Sport... Not sure how I was going to get cutters into the areaa behind the Alternator to cut the heavy duty cable when I couldnt get to the nut to undo it.... there is a large turbo in the road and the only other option was to start undoing the main cable to the starter and by that stage I had had enough... I am no longer young enough or pig headed enough to tackle those sort of jobs... apparently it is far easier from above... given the right tools.

As for checking voltage... I did have a volt meter in the system but it was faulty..and all the info says it isnt too hard to change the Alternator... so I gave it a go. The info on the internet was wrong.... who would have thought....
Anyone in Australia need an alternator for a 2010 RRS 3 litre?? I have one at a good price, never fitted lol

Alternator on a 3.0 is a pain, but totally doable from the top. Last one I did was a Disco 4, think it took about an hour to get out and an hour to get back in. Getting the cable off is a chore, pretty much doing it by feel with a stubby wrench. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Yes did think top as no room to get alternator out one bolts out via bottom or side , will be sorting the weekend if weather holds out thanks

Remove the fan, L plastic intake pipe, intake hose and airbox. This gives you a bit more room and visibility in there. Even with the body off access is a pain.
