Service Required Message

Eh up all,

Whilist actually getting a bit of dry weather I did a clean on the car this weekend and took it for a drive.

On start up I noticed a small message on the dash service required which then quickly disappeared šŸ¤”

I know/ allegedly it had a full service just before I bought it, and having immediately checked a few things when I got it last year it looks like it had, as all service parts were newšŸ‘

So my logic is that itā€™s just not had a service reset or Iā€™m missing something here .

Iā€™ve not got access to a code reader ā˜¹ļø

Can anyone tell me if this is just a standard message that simply needs a reset or what it may be.

Also on my lady BMW X5 I could manually reset using a sequence of dash and button presses, is the same possible as I want to remove the message

Iā€™ve read a few bits on here but not sure if it works for a facelift l320 sdv6 on a 2012 plate

Cheers for any help as usual

Itā€™s the oil change reminder and needs to be reset with diagnostics, regardless of what others may say. There are two different things to reset, service timer and oil life. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Eh up No Expert šŸ‘

Mmm I was dreading hearing that , means a trip to a garage and no doubt a few notes to do very little ā˜¹ļø

They clearly forgot to re set the timer - Ivevdone less than 2000 miles since it was changed, unless of course itā€™s telling me my oils not in great shape which is a different concern, but if I understand itā€™s either time or miles it will work on. please correct me where Iā€™m wrong.

I assume itā€™s a case of using a coder and simply resetting a date .?

Cheers for any more information on this - it all helps, least itā€™s nothing too concerning šŸ‘

Itā€™s based on mileage and/or oil dilution (calculated by DPF regens). This is why two different things need to be reset.

Definitely need the correct diagnostics tool to reset both. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Eh up no expert

Just a thought- if Iā€™m doing short journeys then if the regen is kicking in and because Iā€™m doing short runs have I read it might be affecting oil dilution hence could be a contributing factor

I never realised it would read condition, so got me thinking

If thatā€™s the case what do people run oil wise 5w30 or 5w40 fully synthetic, does it help at all maintaining oil condition

I will change the oil and filter to be on safe side once the codes read, I appreciate how important this is to engine condition

Cheers all

Only 2000 miles, they didnā€™t reset it. Possibly didnā€™t reset it the time before either. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Eh up No Expert šŸ‘

Iā€™m a bit more relaxed thatā€™s itā€™s simply just a reset rather than a dilution issue

My toes curled when I read that šŸ˜

Iā€™ll drop the oil - Iā€™m thinking of doing it via the extraction tube, never tried that before as always felt better to do through sump plug but having read the access and proximity to cross member I donā€™t fancy a 5w30 oil shower šŸšæšŸ˜‚

From the reading on here the top extraction pipe goes right to the bottom of the sump so minimal residue left in sump - unless Iā€™m wrong in which case please correct me.

Cheers in advance

Correct, extraction tube is about the same height as the drain plug so you get nearly everything out of it.

The extraction tube makes an oil change an easy and clean job to do. Just have to make sure everything gets reset. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

Eh up

Firstly thanks No Expert for confirming šŸ‘

All

Well interesting message today on car which is concerning me and I think may be linked to this post šŸ˜³

Mrs ran it today started fine usual message Service Required, drove it 18 miles parked up

Re started and was fine, then drove a mile and got Restricted Performance and Red Triangle , she pulled it straight up after 1/2 mile and said it ran fine but knew she needed to stopšŸ‘

Rang me, she turned car off, then re started, restricted message appeared briefly after car started then disappeared only then got Service Required message back up. She ran it home 16 miles no problem.

I got home tonight and checked :-

Oil level which is a mark or two of max, after 3 hours stood still
Service Required message was only message to flash up when I started it
Thereā€™s no message or info in the menu to suggest any other issues

Is this related to the oil needing changing and the fact itā€™s nearly at its max level when effectively cold

I am going to do the oil and filter asap, question is can I run it in the interim ?

Itā€™s going to be a week or so before I can get it to an Indy to reset the service message and try to see if any fault codes re the Restricted Performance pop up

All input grateful received as always

Sounds either DPF is getting clogged up so you need to drive it above 50mph for about 20-30 mins at above 2000rpm to clear it.

Or if you have a code reader stick the code reader in, I had the same issue with the RP was clogged MAF sensors. Could be that but best to check the code.

I dont think the service interval message and this issue is related.

Get a cheap code reader from Amazon - next day delivery and it will help you if thereā€™s a code stored
