United Kingdom 2009 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Santorini Black

Don't know about theft's but received a letter from LR on Friday to book in to the dealer to have a security update done.

Doesn't say much more other than to ensure both keys are present when taking it in for the update to be done. 2023 D350 FIRST EDITION, SANTORINI WITH CLOUD/EBONY

When I saw this note about a security update being given, I wondered what it was about as I thought that everything had been fixed on L460 and L461.

I am sure that most folk have read JLR managements offensive against insurers and saying how few RRs and RRSs of the latest gen have been nicked, but I read down into a bit of detail that said that owners of RR's even with UWB keys were being invited for a security software update including L460s and 461s.

Reading in more detail I discovered this was about fixing what is called the BCM (Body Control Module ) hack. The BCM hack is only possible when the access has been gained to the inside of the car which can only happen if the car is left open or a hole cut in it to access the CAN. UWB keys prevent the relay attack to gain access in the first place.

Once inside, a thief with a very expensive bit of kit can plug into the OBD port, and download the key data to potentially mobilise the car.

The software update being rolled out is to prevent even this. Coincidentally I received a phone call from JLR assist to book a time for a technician to come and do mine. JLR confirmed it was to fix the BCM hack, though I think he was surprised I knew to ask the question. L461 P460e AB

A JLR trained AA man came this morning and did the update on my drive through the OBD port. He needed both keys present when he did it but the keys are unchanged.

He didn't know what the security update was, he just downloaded the update from the cloud which took 10 minutes and gave me the keys back. No expensive bit of kit, just a laptop.

As my car was only built at the end of September 2023, I am guessing that the final software fix has only been issued recently. The technician said he had only been doing it for a month. L461 P460e AB
