I'll take a look at the headlight and report back.... hopefully not AFS but they do have the cornering lights which illuminate at each side when the steering wheel is turned.

Does the unit need removing to see the yellow label?

The label should be clearly visible on top of the headlight.

I have a sorry tale of trying to avoid spending £1200 on a new AFS headlight via Land Rover. But after many years of struggling with a faulty one, I found that buying the identical brand new headlight made by Hella (who make the LR one) from LR Centre was "just" £466 (Jan 2020). All that was different is was that it didn't have an LR sticker on it. I've just had a quick look on their site and they don't seem to have any but might be worth looking around. Second hand may work but there's always the risk... Robin

Hi Eaters

No yellow AFS labels on top of the lights so I'll cross my fingers I can adjust them with a screwdriver once the height issue is sorted.

Do you have the ID tool which can do height calibration, need to find someone on here who's local 9I'm near Gatwick) who might help me do it for a couple of beers.

Cheers
Martin

Sorry, I've not invested in one (yet). Poor dexterity and limited area to work on the car means I end up using my indi for most stuff Robin

I'm surprised that yours doesn't have the AFS headlights as I thought that it was standard fit on the TDV8. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I'm no expert having had no experience of a non-AFS RRS but I'm slightly surprised they aren't AFS as I assumed that the TDV8 HSE had them as standard (along with a lot of other toys). I'm sure others on here will advise if they were optional. And the fact that one of your headlights is pointing down would suggest they are AFS otherwise why would it be pointing down?

I think another way to check would be to park the car facing a wall with everything off.
Turn on headlights.
Start the car whilst watching the headlights against the wall.
They should do the "dance".
If they do they are AFS

I thought AFS was optional on all models. (thankfully)

As well as the dance, and the fact that the beam can move left and right too, there is also an orange light on the dash on start-up. This is the headlight symbol pointing frontwards in orange. If you look closer there are arrows too. If it's faulty the light will stay on. (and no doubt come on if there are ABS or steering angle errors)

The light is in the speedo cluster.

I think suspension calibration maybe VIN locked on the IID.

Maybe consider an Autel AP200 in white if you can get one for around £50 (ebay/amazon). Some people love them, some hate them, but for the price worth having. It can be a bit slow. and features may get removed

I'm not going to say its easy to cal the suspension with it, but ppl have managed to.

Standard on TDV8 and, I think, the SC in the original version RRS.

AFS is a good system when it's working, and I miss the headlights from my AFS-equipped original TDV8 - much better than the headlights on my facelift non-AFS SDV6. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

D3 lights are known to be better than D4 lights.
So I wonder if that is a similar reason to why you like your old lights, rather than the AFS function itself ?

Two separate issues.

I like AFS for what it does. I found it worked well for me, along with the cornering lights (which, again, were better than the ones on the facelift).

I prefer the older lights' beam pattern over the facelift's beam pattern. I'm fairly sure it's because the facelift was designed so that one doesn't need to change the beam shape when going from RHD roads to LHD roads. No doubt a cost saving for LR when building the cars but it meant the lights are simply not as good.

Have you had issues with AFS? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I took a closer look last night and I def don't have AFS Very Happy

This is an 08 HSE TDV8 model so perhaps they didn't push that option button when it was ordered? I took the old girl down the road and found a my fav wall..... (no this isn't going where you might think lol) and adjusted the turn screws and brought the O/S dipped beam up to match the N/S. Its right at the end of adjustment but ok and I suspect we'll need to reset it after height calibration.

I ordered new cold climate PAS fluid from Smith & Allen and a new ACE valve (I bet its never been changed) so a job for the weekend while i'm changing the diff oils.

Thumbs Up

AFS can be a Censored when it goes wrong - likely someone said "sod that!" then they saw the price of the AFS units over the none-AFS versions and just stuck standard units in.

For future reference, you can really check by seeing if the AFS box is on the bottom of the light unit.
