United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

It's ridiculous that everything now has to be done on a touch screen. That guarantees that the driver will take their eyes off the road for every little adjustment they want to make. There is no justification for it other than cost cutting by the manufacturer. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Yes. Not happy about that, but on the bright side, assuming I now get a MY24 car My 440e AB order becomes a 460e AB complete with 3D surround sound.

Got an email today from my companies car leasing provider (Tusker) to advise the following changes:

The supplying dealership have been in touch to advise your vehicle will now be built within the latest model year (MY24). Please see below the changes to the specification for this vehicle.

Key Enhancements at 24MY
New ‘Gen 4’ 8-speed transmission introduced for both PHEV and V8 Petrol.
PHEV motor upgrade from 105kW to 160kW:
• P440e (440hp) uprated to P460e (460hp)
• P510e (510hp) uprated to P550e (550hp) resulting in 0.4 second 0-60mph improvement to 4.8s
• all PHEV derivatives now achieve 5% BiK.
Improvements to CO2 emissions and EV range:
• CO2 emissions from 16 g/km (-3 g/km vs P440e)
• EV Range up to 74 miles (+4 miles vs P440e).

The primary change to the interior at 24MY is the removal of the Climate Control and Terrain Response dials from the centre console, enhancing the reductive design elements. The function controls have moved to the Pivi Pro touch-screen display, positioned in the side bar of the screen, within easy reach of the driver. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic (ordered Jan. 2023 - delivery expected July 2024!)
2019 P250 SE Dynamic Velar
2015 Evoque
2012 Evoque

Total lunacy. Having to navigate a screen just to turn up the temperature or the fan speed is ridiculous. These sorts of actions should be achievable without the need to take one's eyes off the road. It's not "reductive design" at all. It's simple laziness because it's easier to design a flat piece of plastic and have everything on a monitor screen. Designing ergonomically successful interiors is a real skill - something that appears to be lacking at LR. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Poland 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Buckingham Blue

Since JLR signed up to be one of the first companies to use the new Apple Carplay features, I understand they simplified the electronics architecture by getting rid of the physical buttons, dials and switches which all would be problematic to integrate with these features from Apple.

Personally I would not mind having a full Apple-designed array of displays and I'd appreciate having a user interface in the car that is consistent with the user interface of the personal communication device I use the most. It must be said however, that the temperature dial with push action for seat heating and cooling was the pinnacle of JLR user interface design and it is a shame it goes away. Same thing with the Terrain Response dial, that was the trademark of Land Rover for years and then they changed it to some flimsy buttons and now - since Terrain Response 2 works so well in "auto" mode, there is just no need for it. It will be missed. Regards etc.,

Wojtek

Phone connectivity is great but not everyone drives with a phone connected or even present - I know, surprisingly some people don't live on smartphones.

Having proper controls for things that are used a lot - temp, fan, seats, etc., should be on proper controls, not a screen. It amazes me that this type of design is legal as it must mean reduced driver awareness of the road ahead. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

...but it's Android not Samsung that compares with Apple

Mobile OS Quarterly Market Share Worldwide: Android continues to reign in the operating system market worldwide, with a 71.63% market share in 2023's most recent quarter. Correct but that 71% is split across multiple smaller manufacturers most with a different front end on top of the vanilla Android.

Yes, but the front end doesn't stop the Android bit from working, does it? It's still an Android phone. And so Android is by far the bigger system. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

It's pandered to because the media lovies bought in to it back when it was new and trendy - "everyone has an iMac, darling" - and the designers like it because, well, it's all about design, baby. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Well after having 5 or 6 Android based phones I finally switched to an iPhone and now understand what all the fuss is about.

I was a sceptic before switching and I am now ditching the laptop.

The original comment was about Apple being a minority smartphone supplier, not iOS or Android. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled
