Looking to purchase a L320 TDV8 - advice needed

Hi,

I'm currently looking to purchase a L320 TDV8 fadcelift.

I looked at two yesterday, the first one was 2010 plate, private owner. He has had the turbos replaced recently and a fresh MOT, it's covered just over 100K miles. All the paperwork is in order, regular serving etc. The car itself is nice, the owner lives in the countryside, so you can see the odd light bush scratches on the sides, no doubt they would polish out. Unfortunately he had a puncture the day before and swapped it for the spare until he gets a new tyre fitted. The wheels fitted are 20" but the spare is 19". He said before the test drive that the odd sized wheel, on the front, has caused the gearbox to only allow the first three gears in auto mode but the other three can be selected in command mode. The test drive proved this. I just wanted to confirm that this would be be the case wiith odd sized wheels on the front ?

The second one was a 59 plate, covered around 120K, looked really clean both inside and out, the odd mark here and there but then they're getting on a bit now. The owner, a dealer from home, said he'd spent about £4500 on the car to get the problems resolved. The suspension, when selecting access mode, it would go down then straight back up again. After a garage swapped the height sensors etc, a specialist found that the front shocks had gone hard/stiff and needed replacing. Apparently the car has, so I was told, special suspension fitted, not the same as the others and both front units cost £1600 to supply, he said they were dynamic double shocks, is this correct ?

Also the gearbox didn't change up to the last three gears, apparently his gearbox guy said it was the module and replaced it, but the fault persisted. Anyway according to the delaer, it was a wheel sensor. The test drive was great, very quiet, smooth etc, I plugged in my IID tool and found the following:

P0407-21 (2F) Exhaust gas recirculation sensor B circuit low - General signal failure - signal amplitude<minimum

I advised the chap and he said well it drives fine and theres no dash lights on, so he wouldn't entertain resolving it or a price drop.

Both cars are resonably priced, just wondered what you guys think.

Many thanks

Craig

Certainly walk away from the second one that sounds like a total load of bulls**t to me. With the first one check the tyre size as some cars came with a 255/50 x 19 spare which is a compatible diameter with the 20's which would throw that gear selection therory out the window.

Cheers
Col

If I were to sell the car and had a puncture, I'd do everything that I possibly can to bring the car into proper shape before showing it to a prospective buyer.
Come again once he sorts it out and take the car for a drive, seek another one if the transmission still works in 1-3 only.

The other one is BS. Regards etc.,

Wojtek

Many thanks for your reply Col.

Yes I must admit I was a little dubiuos of the dealer, it just didn't sound right, but I wasn't sure if there were any 'special' suspension systems made, not that I could find anything about them.

The first one, the 19" spare alloy is a different style to the 20" ones fitted, I must admit I didn't check the tyre size. The owner is going to get a new tyre fitted this weekend and I've arranged a more indepth viewing on Monday, and a longer test drive. I guess we'll see what happens then.

Once again many thanks for your reply.

Craig

Hi, yes thats exactly what I am doing.

To be fair the guy had the puncture the day before, he did call me the evening before I was veiwing to tell me what had happened, which was good of him. See whats happens Monday.

Many thanks

This has been put into storage for the last couple of months, so mileage only a little more (less than 200 miles), and will come with a new MOT.

If it was the space saver spare which is much more common on the 2010-2013’s, then it’s a much bigger diameter than the 275/40R20’s. This is the space saver wheel/tire:

Hi Dave, many thanks, just a little bit out of my price range as I want to hold back a couple of thousand just in case, but thank you

First one I'd be tempted to redrive it once the tyre is sorted. If everything is well then it's ok to consider it. Obviously, if the gearbox is still wrong then walk away.

The second one is total BS as others have said. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

The first chap has just called me saying he has had the tyre replaced and the gearbox is now working correctly. He knew I was concerned so thought he'd call before me going to see it again, nice of him.

My car came with this style and size spare from the factory, black as well.

Hi, I've just had another look at the RRS book by James Taylor, he mentions that with the 2010 model, a new system called Adaptive Dynamics, apparently on the supercharged model it was called active roll control.

Looking into this, they used Bilsten DampTronic shock absorbers.

https://aerosus.co.uk/land-rover/range-rov...gLsrvD_BwE

Is this fitted to all models from 2010 ?

Could this be the special suspension that the dealer was on about ?

Many thanks

Craig
