Thinking about buying an RRS and have questions?

I currently have an F15 BMW X5 x30d M Sport and have started looking at petrol Range Rover Sports (SVR, HSE/HST, Autobiography) and have some questions. My budget will probably stretch to a 2018/19 model:-

1) Is the suspension in the SVR much harsher than the HST and Autobiography, and would I notice a harsh ride compared to my X5. I assume all the RRS’s have air suspension?

2) Is the 3.0l P400 a decent engine or does it not have enough power/torque for this kind of vehicle?

3) Apart from fuel economy and insurance is the SVR more expensive to run?

4) Are there any major and/or common issues to look out for? I know they used to have air suspension issues, is this still the case?

Any help appreciated.

Hi

In my experience in answer to your questions.

1. The SVR has a sportier ride than the Autobiography, it makes a difference on wheel size, although the SVR is on larger alloys, as to the ride I have not experienced an SVR but can confidently say the ride is a lot smoother in a RRS as the X5 has always been set up for road handling, the RR is a true off road vehicle, it gives you the best of both worlds.

2. I have never owned a Petrol RRS.

3.As the SVR is a performance vehicle then probably will be using tyres and Brake componants on a regular basis, all RRS are not inexpensive to run although there are some good Indy workshops out there, it depends on whether a LR Service record is important?

4. The easiest way to answer is that it is a Land Rover Lol Big Cry , although BMW etc have their share of issues, probably best to purchase one from a Land Rover Dealership as it will come with a JLR warranty which is good unless you own a Diesel vehicle as certain components are not covered but that is another story Lol

I hope that helps and I am sure the SVR owners will be only too glad to help.

David

4. The major issue with modern Land Rovers is the LR dealership workshops. Avoid them by using a decent independent LR specialist and you'll have far fewer problems. If you do have problems, they'll likely be sorted in one visit rather than several that is often the case with LR dealerships. If you insist on using a LR dealership, you will get very familiar with their customer waiting area and "free" coffee.

Air suspension is not the issue it was back in the P38 days. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks. With regards to servicing and repairs I’d have to check the small print of the PCP deal as I believe some specify it has to be main dealer.

I guess if you're just renting it then it's less of a worry. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

With PCP you're still responsible for the upkeep.

I've seen a nice HSE dynamic with the S/C V6, is this a good engine?

Oh, one other question. Do all HST’s have the Suede steering wheel and if so can these be swapped out for a leather one, and roughly what cost?

Hi

I have learned something today

I have not heard of a HST spec before, also I have never seen a suede steering wheel either?

I presume if you check E Bay there will be someone that has a leather steering wheel for sale, a good indy will probably swap it for you, I am unsure whether a JLR Stealer would want to take on the job of swapping second hand parts ?

All the used 3.0l P400's all seem to be HST, I've not been able to find the 3.0l P400 in any other variant.
