New Owner :) - Couple of quick ones - Electrical based

Hey Guys,

Picked up my new to me 2013 RRS HSE Dynamic today, had a great drive back from Winchester - hitting a stonking 44.6mpg!!!
I do have a couple of quick questions..

1. I have the meridian speakers installed but on the audio settings it seems to be stuck on Stereo only - I can see the 3 other options meridian, Dolby etc and I can press on them but it’s not selecting them? Feels like the subwoofer isn’t working also as I’ve turned that and bass up and can’t feel next to no difference? The battery was showing low when I picked it up today as it’s been sat at the dealership for 3/4 weeks and hasn’t moved as the power tailgate wouldn’t open on its own and the power tow bar wouldn’t work.
2. Oil level indicator is not showing - I’m selecting the service menu when the ignition isn’t on and it’s stating oil level not available?

The guys at the dealership did say when batteries get low on these they throw out a few different electronic issues - I’ve just tried the above when I got home after about 4 hours of driving and still can’t get them to work?
Any pointers guys?

Oil question is simple, though baffling as to why LR designed such a daft system
Car must be up to temp, parked on level ground and left to stand for 20 mins.
Alternatively, for an instant reading, there’s a workaround involving having the bonnet open, not sure of the details for that, but it’s been mentioned plenty of times on here and elsewhere. 2016 L494 HSE

Ah I tried the oil indicator at the dealers but had only been running for 5 mins and I tried when I got back but car had been running for a good 4 hours after driving - just see the bonnet trick will check that out tommorrow.

Going to try the bonnet trick this morning to get the oil level.
Still struggling to select any other sound settings - seems to be stuck on stereo? Can you only select the other sound settings/surround on certain settings - like only CD audio playing

You will not need the bonnet trick, if the car has not been started.

Ah :/ that’s maybe why I can’t see a surround sound option, but have the 3 other sound options but obviously can’t select them :/ - not sure if it’s an amp issue or electrical issue as the sub is non existent when I turn the level to max.

Australia 2013 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 SE Fuji White

There was an advisory to dealers on the oil level indicator. Mine was fixed under the original warranty before the 3 years was up. Oil flows up the wiring in the sump basically stopping the signal from getting to the computer. Its an expensive item to get fixed. Basically it is a stupidly designed system to replace a dipstick!

Thanks Barry - looks like it will be the sensor - so I’m covered under my extended warranty so will get that sorted.
Only issue is do these have a low oil warning system? Last service was 8000 miles ago so oil should be still fairly high - I’m driving to the lakes on Saturday so was thinking of just sticking half a litre of oil in just as a back up measure.
Obviously don’t want to overfill or it run it dry!

Approx 1 litre from min to max and is 125ml per section on the indicator
Overfilling is worse than being a bit low Thumbs Up
I put 300ml in as mine showed on the halfway and is now fine on the indicator

Did you try the oil level check with the engine warm, level ground etc? I guess you did but still not available?
My oil level sensor has been replaced twice, first time under warranty at just under 3 years old and then again a year later. Now it tells me “oil level OK” any time I ask for it, so maybe it’s knackered again.
The only other way to check is to suck all the engine oil out with a vacuum pump via the dedicated pipe and measure the volume. Then either replace the same oil, or replace with new (if it’s going in for oil sensor replacement, no point in putting new oil in).
I’d be very reluctant to put more oil in, when you don’t know the level, as too much oil will damage the engine 2016 L494 HSE

Ah cool thanks for the replies guys - I'll prob leave it for now until its booked in then.
Is there anyway a OBD scan tool can check the oil level also?

Yeh tried all the usual tricks to get it to show including the bonnet open and pressing cancel twice etc

Interesting thought, though if the sensor is goosed then an obd wouldn’t get the data either?
I did wonder if a length of bicycle brake wire or similar could be fed down the oil extraction pipe to “dip” the oil level. Haven’t (yet) tried it, but the bends in the pipe look tight so may not be possible? 2016 L494 HSE
