I’m having new tyres fitted and Hunter alignment done on Saturday. It’s my first time having the car Hunted. I read today that the car should be full of fuel. Is it an internet myth, would never have guessed that. Anything else I should know?. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

I've had 3 Hunter alignments and never knew this and the technicians have never mentioned it! I can see the rationale.

I would check that all of your suspension arms, bushes and associated components are all in good order. The vehicle should also be be put in to "tight tolerance" mode for the alignment. This just means the suspension works harder to get as close to level as possible. Technically, a Hunter place should have a dongle to set this but most don't as it's an expense for them if they don't do many LRs. Most will just leave the driver's door slightly open to stop the suspension moving around.

If you have an IID Tool, you can set tight tolerance using that, just remember to put it back to normal once done or your EAS system will be working overtime. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Tool Menu > Service/Test > RLM-Suspension > Set Tight Tolerance - Yes. Don't forget to take it out of Tight Tolerance when done. Easy as.

Surely if your paying someone to carry out 4 wheel alignment you shouldn't have to do anything,,, they should know exactly what is required and have all the tools to carry out the job. I had mine done a few years ago at my go to place (( team valley landrover) issued prior to going about full fuel tank etc, they said it makes no difference. They use a Beisbarth ( spelling may he wrong) machine. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Maybe if they say "it makes no difference" then they don't know what they're doing.

Or maybe Land Rover are just being silly by saying "full tank of fuel and tight tolerance mode is required".

Simple solution have it done with empty fuel tank and not in tight tolerance mode, see what the readings are, then fill the tank, put it in tight tolerance have it checked again and compare the readings, if it makes no difference they should both be within the specified parameters. I know L/R do like to complicate things somewhat, but you would like to think they say full tank etc. for a reason.

What is strange is why they made the suspension so adjustable in the first place. It's like a race car's suspension compared to most road cars.

I have had a play on a Hunter system - changing ride height does change camber but doesn't change toe. It does alter the wheelbase very slightly, however. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

An update to this. I rung last week and asked for the tyres I wanted (Continental Allseason Contact), they said no problem and a discounted price of £213ea from £224 was agreed. I received a text message the following day to say my tyres were in. So this morning I set off and went the 30 miles or so and they got going. They found the 2 NS wheels were buckled so I approved to have them repaired. All done I paid my dues which was cheaper than the amount I’d budgeted. I drove home and the drive was so smooth and back to how I remember it. This has also fixed my problem of the reluctance to change into sixth. When I got home I had a look at the tyres and read the receipt and they have fitted 275/40 R20 Continental Sport Contact 4x4s’. Now this is a summer tyre when I was looking to go to an all season. I’ve re-googled the original tyre and I can’t find them in my size, so obviously my mistake. So I feel it’s my fault for not researching further. Also with regards the free alignment within 3 months - they don’t do that anymore but would for me as if spent so much money.

I’ve had my car aligned (not my RRS) several times over the years, including on a Hunter machine.

I have NEVER got the car back with the steering wheel exactly level when the wheels are pointing directly ahead. Maybe I am a bit more OCD than most. It always has to go back, sometimes more than once. RRS MY17 SDV6 AB
