I’d get a sim for it Terry - one of those 3 24 month jobs off Amazon or eBay. They’re cheap enough. It’s a right ballache tethering to your phone as you’ve found because the connection cannot be relied on. Most of it is down to the phone though, not the RRS. When you do get CarPlay working will need to be plugged in and in my experience it’s not the easiest way to tether and use CarPlay together.

That is very old software, when I reported problems with my 2017 they updated the software to fix problems with music, screen freezing, etc.
