Your meant to have this. 4 wires plug into it. Won’t start without it.

I've found my original and plugged that into it. It doesn't light when the door is opened or lights switched on. Presumably, this is the bit that interrogates the key to see if it is valid and/or charges the key.

No. I'm going to have a prod of the engine ECU and clean the connectors (probably won't make a difference but will make me think I'm doing something!). Looking at the amount of condensation on the inside of the windows, the electrics may have got damp whilst it has been sitting idle. Even the steering-wheel has gone mouldy.
