Does the clunk coincide with the suspension 'settling'? I'm wondering if it could be anti-roll bar drop links, which could also explain the occasional dull thunk while driving 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S |

Do you mean the noise happened as the suspension dropped? If so and it wasn't drop links, I'd be thinking lower arm bushes - they are also a common fail and result in a clunk when there is a fore/aft load on the arms (which happens during braking but also if the suspension travels while the wheel is stationary).
