Hello from Disco owner

Fancying a change from my Discovery 4 2012. It’s 9yrs old now and it’s been fairly reliable to be fair. Always liked the looks of the Range Rover sport also like the Vogue ( a bit too much money tho) . Anyone made the jump for a Disco. Looking at minimum 2017 year if I can . They seem to cost £10k more than my Disco4 did at similar ages ! Tow a caravan as well so still need some thing meaty. I know about the crankshaft issues so may consider a V8 or a good warranty! Approved used only seem to come with 1yr now , used to be 2 ?

LR approved used warranty has only been a year for a few years now on all models.

I came from several D3s and D4s and wouldn’t go back, this is just a whole different level of car, it’s also the same engine as you have so whilst yes there is the same risk as you have now.

There are two things you will need to learn to live with compared to D4, there are not as many driver storage areas and the big one is load space, RRS is tiny (relatively). In a D4 I could get 3 full sets of dive gear and 3 people very easily, in RRS, 2 and it’s full. Joined the X5 45e club

Yes currently away in the caravan and the Disco was rammed with stuff. Amazing what I’ve managed to get in it so yes it might be a compromise. Only been browsing the forecourts till now and researching. Engine troubles aside surely can’t be that not expensive compared to the Disco. Also have an indie to look after things. Timing belt any easier to do in the Sport ?

Unless you do reasonable mileage, why not consider a V6 petrol? No DPF/oil dilution issues, less likely to be closed out of city centres and still 350-400BHP MY dependant. If 6 numbers dropped into my lap that's where my money would be going.

Hmm V6 petrol only thought it was the 5.0 SVR that was around ? I’ll go look again!

Edit fuel economy certainly takes a hit, not sure I could live with that day in day out? ULEZ I’m well aware off but seldom drive in city centres.

Can't some of that stuff not just go in the big box on wheels that you're towing?

Never understood why people towing a big box end up with the car full and kids pressed against the windows because there's no room in the car. But I don't understand the whole caravanning thing anyway. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Ahhh caravaning.... keys in a pot and wife swapping aint it? Very Happy

Yeah I agree, the caravan is the best way to transport stuff, why even use the boot?

Straight 6 I think, near enough 400bhb and super smooth.

Forgot to say, I bought from pentworth this year - landrover specialist ( allegedly ) and it was advertised with a 2 year warranty. I bought and saw it said 1 year..... pushed for 2 and got 2 - not sure if its worth the paper its written on, but obv they can do 2 years Wink

Well no swapping here as I’m the youngest by a good couple of decades Smile . Anyways Disco or Range can well pull nearly anything, however you do have plated weights on caravans so don’t want to go over it so do have to move stuff around. To make sure not illegal!

Never knew you could go over plated weights with holiday stuff tbh. guess its something I have never had to deal with Smile
I need to get a trailer for mine, but it seems you cant actually tow much with them on my licence due to weights - 750kg iirc.
I dont know about the RRS but my mate had a disco and towed a caravan, mpg in diesel was attrocious. I cant remember if it was a 2.7 or a 3.0. Elgin to Dundee was a full tank he said :/ Not sure how the petrol ones do, worth asking on some caravan pages as well perhaps?

Mid 20s towing a heavy van , which to be fair I don’t think is that bad. Petrol I think would be just as bad/maybe worse ? RRS appears to be better mpg when not towing. Anyway will look around . Not sure I’d be buying brand new. So possibly something 3/4yrs old .

Mid 20's aint bad tbh. I am at 31 atm mixed driving with nothing on the back, but I barely ever drive hard... getting old!
tbh I dont think the petrols get mid 20s without towing.

Good point. It's worth remembering that the towing vehicle also has maximum weight limits. Four big adults and some big suitcases can get you close to / over the weight limit of a Disco. Loading one up to the gunnels can definitely have you over unless it's all high bulk, low mass stuff. You only have about 500kg of payload available which is easy to get to if you're not careful. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Just having a look as we drive up past Tain abs we are averaging 34 !! Yes it’s not accurate but that’s not towing. My last car a CRV got mid to high 20s towing. Really not a huge difference which is why I can live with that economy.
