Front suspension knocking/sensitive issues.....

Hi all,

Recently the front suspension of my 2011 RRS (TDV6) has been getting worse and worse. The steering feels heavier and it feels strangely sensistive even when cruising on the motorway. Also, when I accelerate or decelerate quickly, I hear or feel a knock.

I'm in Spain and the main dealer is useless (or worse than that actually) and you guys have saved me thousands in the past by offering better suggestions than mechanic here offer (as they don't have a lot of experience with RRs). For example, one mechanic said my turbo had gone but you pointed me in the direction of the manifold. £500 instead of £1,300 or more.

I know the suspension issue is hard to diagnose without actually seeing it but I would be extremely grateful for any tips or hints that I could subtly suggest to the mechanic who did the manifold. Any suggestions re. approximate price for the fix too would be gratefully rec'd.

The first thing that springs to mind given the age of the car,,, and not knowing it's history, is front lower suspension arms. These are a common issue, normally rather than try to fit new bushes the old arms are cut off and new ones fitted,,, saves a lot of time, but 4 wheel alignment must be carried out when this has been done,,,,,,, and it needs to be done by someone with the correct equipment ands knows exactly what they are doing or you will be worse off than you were originally.
The steering might well be a separate issue,,, do a search on here and you will find a few ideas. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

One way to diagnose the lower arm bushes is to drive slowly - around walking pace - and then tap the brakes. You'll hear a knock if the bushes are worn. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Great advice. Thank you. I'll give it a try.

It really helps to go to my mechanic not totally blind. All mechanics make mistakes but the levels of errors and incompetence in Spain us off the scale. I hope I've found someone reliable, but even they need a nudge in the right direction (from you guys) sometimes.

You may also consider checking the lower steering column universal joint. They can become stiff and notchey when turning the steering. I take it you have checked the PS fluid level already.

I've been quoted £450 for parts, labour and realignment.

Doesn't that seem quite a lot for just changing the bushes???

Hi,

Surely they mean changing the entire arm? I don't know of anyone who would change the Bush vs buy a whole new arm? I installed Myle HD arms on my L320 and the parts alone were £300. I expect he is getting you complete arms but just cheaper ones for a £100 each and then £250 to install them?

It's about a 4 hour job if you know what your doing and have a recip saw handy just incase.

Confirm with the mechanic he is changing the whole arms would be my first point of call.

Quick update: Got the bushes done (although it was about £420!!!) and the car drives so much better. No more knocking noises and it weirdly feels like the power steering is now turned on, if that makes sense.
