One of the reasons for fitting a x pipe in days of old, was to introduce a little back pressure for the old auto boxes to work more efficiently, however that is not the case today, another was to enhance the 'rumble'.

It wasnt MIJ, a local exhaust centre i was passing by near were I live, they mentioned something about engine balancing??? and would be less noisier than straight pipes but better for the engine in the long run.

Yes, they had had tailpipes welded on to them at some point, badly, and that was why I was looking at alternatives.
