Just on the oil levels, Im and old fashioned nerd so I check the oil and fluids in mine pretty regular, just habit more than anything but normal when I wash the car I check tires and oil etc... (Im a private pilot so engine checks are part of the fun!)

I check the others halfs car at the same time as let face it she is not going to! Like most would wait for the car to spring a message!

If the volume is small of the failure then LR shouldnt be that worried about covering the costs and in all fairness if some of the after market warranty/insurances has paid also they havent had to pay there either, (im sure those warranty companies would be interested in getting their money back also seeing as this is a known fault but just not publically admitted.

We all know faults happen but if the consumer has just used the car for it intended purpose then the mfr should not fight it they should cover the cost and then have a customer for life! if it was handled well and without question none of use would be moaning about it we would all be singing the praises of LR which is always good for business. If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

Glad this forum warned of the crank problems associated with the V6 before I made my purchase, awful situation for an owner to be in with a relatively low mileage vehicle.

I’m like yourself PJ old fashioned and check levels each week religiously must admit I miss a good old fashioned dipstick lol.Must admit I have used Zx1 extralube in my fluids and fuel for every vehicle I’ve had over past 15 odd years and swear by it.I remember an old St220 V6 I had and the garage that serviced it couldn’t believe how solid the engine was with ove4 100000 miles on it no tattles knocks .I agree that the regular maintenance is a way to hopefully longevity in most vehicles .

Yeah it also allows to see if there is any pattern forming such as a recent spout of long drives and oil usage, of uneven tire wear is perhaps a sign of something either tracking or suspension related, all the basics really, For my piece of mind, I then shouldnt get some unexpected bills or something if I can nip it in the bud!

I also normally get an oil change in between services if I was doing a lot of mile which I dont now, also miss the dipstick's you can tell a bit about what the engine is doing from the colour, smell and feel of it. On Heli's its a religon main rotor and tail roter gearboxs have inspection bubbles and, they use oil so its good to keep trakc of how much goes in!

GAP tool is also handy to see the DPF data etc... to know if I should go for a long un interrupted drive to clean it out,

Still none of this would have saved the engine this time round

Just had news and they have the gine running some how but its sounds like a bag of spanners inside a concrete mixer! The oil filter is full of swarf so its another engine and 2 turbos!

So waitig to hear what the dealr can get out of LR as like they said it shouldnt have gone and has only ever been touched by LR for its servicing.

They think its a bearing that has exploded as the crank is still turning othersie it wouldnt run! but the internals will be badly scored!

Believe it or not, sometimes the engine still runs and the vehicles are even drivable with a snapped crank!

Having suffered from a spun bearing myself on a 3.0, I wish you the best of luck in getting it fixed. It's a sickening feeling. Kev

If it is the crank shaft that’s failed, ( I hope it isn’t) is there an upgraded crank in the new engine that gets fitted so this doesn’t happen again. I would certainly hope so as I imagine the new engine will only come with 1 year warranty and it will always be in back of mind will it happen again. I’m watching this post with lots of interest

There is no upgraded crank for LR engines - the new US engine as fitted to the Ford F pickups is modified but these cannot be retrofitted to the LR engines as the US engine has a different bottom end and modifications to the block. 07MY RRS TDV6

I will be asking the question on that, so far they have said that the engines fitted are not new they are recon units and I would expext more than 1 year at that type of cost considering all of this is an LR problem! I also wonder if the recon engine will be the unit with increase power so form 292BHP to 306BHP.

I will see what LR say to day and I either might be pleasantly surprised or extremely annoyed! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

The power has got nothing to do with the engine, power comes from the ECU programming. Andy.

Yeah I get that but wondered if the ECU may need to be recoded for this new engine etc. so just wondered if it would get the power output of the slightly newer models or not. If they dont touch the ECU then it would be the same. If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

When my L320 (207DT) went bang I looked at options and eventually decided on a replacement engine from LR. A good friend who works at a LRMD parts dept. told me that if they order a factory service exchange unit and none are available then LR ship a new unit for the same cost (but won't admit to it). After much haggling I ended up paying £4691.74 (plus £2k surcharge, refunded when they receive the old engine back) and I got a full new service exchange engine (LR006701) less ancillaries, so I was more than happy with that. Both new and service exchange engines were at the time warranted for 12 months. He also confirmed that no items from returned engines are re-used but could not explain where the service exchange engines are sourced from.

Logically if they don't re-use the old engines then the questions remains where are service exchange engines sourced from? Sold the car to a mate 12 months later and the thing has now done over 450K, (312K on the original engine) and still going strong.

I know that the later 306DT is however a dearer lump (£8,128.99 + VAT + £2625 surcharge) but I am sure the above still applies.

My Poorly Crank

Hope this helps.

Hmm interesting! I can see how they can nly give 12months on something they are charging so much for that is only being put in the car becuase of poor build or design in the first place, to me seems criminal!

Also does seem weird how a recon engine is not from another car, unless they are from cars that have had differetn faults where the enigne is still serviceable but I can see there would be many of those around!

I got a call last night from the garage who have said they havent heard anything back from LR yet but that doesnt mean much he said. He also said they have asked for full asisstance to cover the full cost on it as the workshop and service manager both said that they agree and that the car is such low mileage has only been serviced by the dealer nework and is in near perfect condition al over, but they said it all depends on LR, they said they have done cars with the same crankshaft sheered and LR have covered the cost in full and they have more miles on them. I see that maybe the age might count agaisnt me as it one of the first but who knows!

He said it was a recon engine they install wheihc has been ground out back to factory finish whch to me sounds more likely the case and I guess they either install better bearings or seat them in a better way.

As Soon as I hear something Ill give an update and if they can get LR to fund it 100% then I will be more than happy to fund them a night out on the beers! But I am not holding my hopes on it! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!
