Having read all the horror stories on here, Disco forum, and multiple Facebook groups then I really don’t think there is any preventive measure you can take apart from proper servicing. Whilst the number seems very high, and higher than anyone would hope, remember people flock to forums and Facebook for help so the numbers you see here are artificially high. Overall it is still a fairly small percentage when you look at all Disco 4s and RRS with this engine. I’m on my third car with this engine, it hasn’t frightened me off. I do however have a 3 year warranty to cover engine, transmission and suspension.....just in case Joined the X5 45e club 1994 Defender 90 300 tdi |

Thank you for the reply guys, the company I work had a few none of them gone wrong engine wise. I am planning to get one from main dealers i believe the warranty it comes with covers with approved used then have a look at after market warranty. |

Cheers mate it was going in for belts service tomorrow too only based on age not miles thought I’d be ahead of the curve! It would be awesome if it was that, the RAC guy wanted to try cranking it so who knows of that has done even more damage! He couldn’t manually turn it afte that it got so far then stopped🥵 If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

Agreed, when mine went it cranked over so far then stopped, sounds very similar, in all fairness if the cranks gone it's scrap anyway unless you go down the route of non-oem crank and a rebuild, not heard good things about them though.

Cheers chap and hopefully I dont mind paying some towards it if it shows willing but for something like a crank sheering/snapping in reality it should be done FOC considering the mileage, age shouldnt come into it for something that heavy duty. It should also be done FOC out of embrassment that they let this happen in the first place, it make you wonder if there are flaws like this on ll models that we dont know about, condsigering that engine has been used ina lot of cars with the fault being known it should really be a no quibble fix regardless of cost.

I sold a 2014 with 33000 miles & full LR history a few years ago & the crank snapped on that & landrover wanted £18500 plus vat,,,The good news was it was still covered under the Approved warranty so it was done FOC. Andy.

I’m no legal expert bit surprised no class action law suit has been started against JLR surely from a brand name perspective it’s bad news for them from a brand perspective to have this problem reflecting on their product.Surely some legal eagle Law Firm could look at this .Just my non legal thoughts lol |

Because class actions are not permitted in the UK although there are Group Litigation Orders. I don't think it is being picked up by law firms because there is not enough money to me made out of it considering the relatively small numbers of people affected by the issue. Tim RRS sold and replaced with a Skoda Kodiaq after appalling RR Dealer experience and LR inability to supply new cars in any sort of reasonable time frame.. |

Thanks Tim for comments how widespread an issue would you say the problem is from your knowledge? I did read a mechanics viewpoint saying all the ones he had through the garage were related to oil levels. Not sure as reading information it seems reading these people have had issues on well serviced maintained vehicles.I must admit I’m a it confused lol yes I know that’s not hard lol |

Well the actions that are being taking in the USA and Europe all seem to involve very large companies, for example VW and various drug companies. This would lead me to believe that numbers in the 100s of thousands minimum need to be affected to make it profitable for the lawyers to get involved. I don't believe that this is the case with crankshaft breakages.
