United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Fuji White

I changed the oil in between services on my vehicles even though I only do around 7000 miles & I had a crank go on a L494 within 2 weeks of me selling it with 33000 miles & full Landrover history Andy.

Does anyone know what contributes to this aswell? I know the bearing design is cause but does servicing have any contributions especially with the oil dilution. Is there anyway to prevent other than changing the oil every so often rather than sticking to LR's schedule.

Having read all the horror stories on here, Disco forum, and multiple Facebook groups then I really don’t think there is any preventive measure you can take apart from proper servicing.

Whilst the number seems very high, and higher than anyone would hope, remember people flock to forums and Facebook for help so the numbers you see here are artificially high. Overall it is still a fairly small percentage when you look at all Disco 4s and RRS with this engine. I’m on my third car with this engine, it hasn’t frightened me off.

I do however have a 3 year warranty to cover engine, transmission and suspension.....just in case Joined the X5 45e club

Thank you for the reply guys, the company I work had a few none of them gone wrong engine wise. I am planning to get one from main dealers i believe the warranty it comes with covers with approved used then have a look at after market warranty.

I’m sat here in my car with the hazards on waiting for a tow truck! I’m pretty sure mine has just gone!

Was taking it down to get its 84 month service tomorrow morning too

41k on the clock full lrsh

No warning apart from a tick/knock sound developed and then she just died! No dash light know warnings nothing

I was almost coasting down the road and was lucky to just be able to pull over and stop without causing any chaos!

Just the smirk grins on people passing by as people relish in Range Rover owners grief!😉

I suppose I’ve at least saved on the service cost I guess as in order to fix it the oil will have to replaced anyway!

I don’t mind be a guinea pig for some things but this is not one of them!

Sod’s law I was gonna buy warranty this afternoon too! Not much point as a I guess they won’t pay out seeing as a claim is probably definitely gonna be made within a few days I’m sure they will have that in the t and c

Thanks LR If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

OMG what bad luck!

On a previous sport I had similar and it was the HP Fuel Pump belt, easy check is take off the oil filler cap and also the spout that twist fits into the inlet manifold and then you can clearly see a camshaft, spin it over and see if there's any movement. Later in my earlier sports life I did however have the crank snap so I've seen both cases!

My MY 14.5 L494 is still ok at 202K (fingers crossed and touching wood)

Best of luck!

Cheers mate it was going in for belts service tomorrow too only based on age not miles thought I’d be ahead of the curve! It would be awesome if it was that, the RAC guy wanted to try cranking it so who knows of that has done even more damage! He couldn’t manually turn it afte that it got so far then stopped🥵 If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

Agreed, when mine went it cranked over so far then stopped, sounds very similar, in all fairness if the cranks gone it's scrap anyway unless you go down the route of non-oem crank and a rebuild, not heard good things about them though.

Fingers crossed for you!

Cheers chap and hopefully I dont mind paying some towards it if it shows willing but for something like a crank sheering/snapping in reality it should be done FOC considering the mileage, age shouldnt come into it for something that heavy duty. It should also be done FOC out of embrassment that they let this happen in the first place, it make you wonder if there are flaws like this on ll models that we dont know about, condsigering that engine has been used ina lot of cars with the fault being known it should really be a no quibble fix regardless of cost.

I understand the cost to recall all of them would be high so wait until it happens but as and when it does it should be dealt with without question which would further the brand loyalty and reputation as being one of the best, but Im guessing from what I have heard from others the bean counters want to fight it!

Finger crossed! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

I sold a 2014 with 33000 miles & full LR history a few years ago & the crank snapped on that & landrover wanted £18500 plus vat,,,The good news was it was still covered under the Approved warranty so it was done FOC. Andy.

I’m no legal expert bit surprised no class action law suit has been started against JLR surely from a brand name perspective it’s bad news for them from a brand perspective to have this problem reflecting on their product.Surely some legal eagle Law Firm could look at this .Just my non legal thoughts lol Rolling with laughter

Yeah Im surprised too! Its basically like driving around with a WW2 un exploded bomb in the engine and there is no telling when it might go off!

A warranty in reality isnt something that should have to cover this either as its an inherrent defect at point of sale so the manufacturer is responsible for the poor workmanhsip or whoever actually manufactured or built the parts that lead to the failure.

A crankshaft is a major component of the engine and as such should one of the last things that fails, unless they are admitting that they built those engines with a life span of no more than 8years or 50k miles?

If the fault is known to them then they should be responsible, I get it if the car has maybe done more than 100K they could argue wear and tear but considering they offer a warranty of upto 100K or 3yrs suggest that they expect the car to be able to drive to 100K at the very least, I wasnt aware that somethign as chunky as a metal crankshaft would fatigue due to age with such a rapid decline otherwsie there would be car suffering from this problem all over the place an not just within their own product line.

It obviuos that the defect is a known to them so that is almost an admission otherswise they would not have offered others some good will towards the costs!

I will see how it plays out!

I did find this petition from other who have suffered so not sure if its been on here or not but would be handy if you guys could help sign it to get it to the target if only for the moral victory if something could be done to get them to acknowledge it and offer to rectify the issue upon failure up to say 100K

Because class actions are not permitted in the UK although there are Group Litigation Orders.
I don't think it is being picked up by law firms because there is not enough money to me made out of it considering the relatively small numbers of people affected by the issue. Tim

Thanks Tim for comments how widespread an issue would you say the problem is from your knowledge? I did read a mechanics viewpoint saying all the ones he had through the garage were related to oil levels. Not sure as reading information it seems reading these Rolling with laughter people have had issues on well serviced maintained vehicles.I must admit I’m a it confused lol yes I know that’s not hard lol Rolling Eyes

Well the actions that are being taking in the USA and Europe all seem to involve very large companies, for example VW and various drug companies. This would lead me to believe that numbers in the 100s of thousands minimum need to be affected to make it profitable for the lawyers to get involved. I don't believe that this is the case with crankshaft breakages.
As a point of interest when I had my V6 diesel I asked the service department about the issue. They confirmed that it does exist and that in all cases that came through them, where the car had been maintained by LR, claims for costs were honoured.. I guess its a difficult decision to make about servicing on an older car as LR service costs are expensive. I have heard of costs as high as £18k for an engine being quoted so be nosey I spoke to an engine reconditioning company, they quoted £5k.
