Isn't this what the new Defender should have been?

Priced more realistically as well. MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

According to the Autocar report its not available for another 18 months and drives like a Jeep Wrangler on the road, prices from £40k.

Tim Tim
RRS sold and replaced with a Skoda Kodiaq after appalling RR Dealer experience and LR inability to supply new cars in any sort of reasonable time frame..

i think it is what the purists / series / original defender owners wanted.. but it most probably did not play to
what LR wanted from the vehicle in regard to attracting new customers and markets. In addition with the
BMW plant and Auto, i assume it will not be as easy to fix as many of the old Defender owners wanted,
no modern vehicle is

From a price perspective it seems comparable to the new Defender, so hardly cheaper. I do wish them well,
there will be a market for it.. but i believe many of the purists who run older land rovers may find it is not
the cheap utility/alternative they thought it would be Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

Whilst I don't consider myself a purist, I do think that the new Defender seems to have strayed too close to others in the LR range.

But the thing I can't get my head around is that they didn't include a pick-up truck variant. You only have to look around to see that there is a significant market for them - Navara, Hilux etc. Or have I missed something Robin

THe reason LR haven't done a pick up version of the new Defender is because it doesn't have a ladder frame chassis. If you cut the top off the rear of the new Defender, the thing will just want to fold up/crumple.

They'd have to put an awful lot of extra metal in the lower panels to make it structurally strong enough. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Ah - thanks RRSDTDV8. Then I think that's a fundamental flaw in their strategy! Robin

Their strategy is "premium and luxury SUVs", not "things a builder might buy". They're not interested in the utility market anymore, they're interested in wealthy people buying expensive status items.

The flaw in their strategy is more likely to be that in the next couple of years many people won't be chucking £1000/month at a shiny new LR because they'll be worried about redundancies etc. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Having sold Japanese vehicles in West Africa, whilst a relatively small marketplace, probably 90% of the vehicles we sold were 4x4s (generally sold to businesses rather than individuals)and the double-cab pick up was by far the best seller. MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)
