Did the TDV8 not have a issue with warping the exhaust manifold and snapping some studs that caused something like that. Just have a vague re-collection of reading something to that effect.

Well who’d have thought it, really didn’t think it would be an exhaust manifold stud broken, I really stand correcting.
Talk about barking up the wrong tree.
After stripping out all the heat shields through the n/s wheel arch and removing the top wishbone to get access, I find the tell tail sooty black mark behind the turbo coming from the exhaust manifold / head.

Anyone know how to remove the manifold or any ideas how to drill it out and re-tap in situ, or have I got to have the engine out.
Relieved it’s not the turbo, but really p!ssed now as its seemingly a bigger job for a 2 bit stud.

Cheers
Graham

If the stud has broken the manifold will be warped. No one can say for definate which happens first, but the result is always the same.

I had this only recently and had both manifolds replaced. Only place for new manifolds is LR, cost for these alone was £1,627.34 including VAT!

My indie got in a specialist with a fancy tool for removing the studs with the engine in situ, but the body was off.

I wouldn't like to try drilling the studs without lifting the body

For a start, the turbos have to come off to remove the manifolds, and even with the body out the way, access still isn't great

However, out local engineering place skins the manifolds for us. Expensive for what it is, but hugely cheaper than a new manifold. Logic says that if the manifold has already warped, it won't warp again Thumbs Up

Hi all, thought I’d update you all on my success.
pretty pleased with myself as I have managed to change 3 studs and drill out, tap and heli-coil the problem broken one.
All of this was achieved through the N/S wheel arch. By removing, wheel, top wishbone, 3 heat shields, suspension potentiometer and pulling brake lines/sensor cables to one side.
I used hex head drills mounted through a 110 degree angled drill adapter, powered by a rechargeable drill to drill out the the broken one. I first used an easy out which didn’t really do a lot, other than to lead me to think that it would snap any time. So I drilled the sud out in various stages going up a size each time. Fortunately I got it dead centre by fist using self centring drills.
Eventually I got to M8 which is the size of the stud. I managed to pick most of the remaining thread out, but by now had gone slightly off center. Trying the new stud I was not entirely happy so I drilled and heli-coiled it back to m8. Nice snug fit I was confident and removed the adjacent studs and fitted new. All was torqued down and it’s now back to its old self.
I was a little concerned that the manifold might have warped, so on advise from a friend I heated it to a dull red between the ports before torquing down. His thinking was if it was warped it would allow it to be pulled back into place, if not no harm done. It seams at the moment (50 miles) he was right.
All this took 7 hours split over Sat & Sun. if it holds its saved me a body lift at a workshop, if not it’s back to the drawing board.
Nothing ventured nothing gained!!
😃😃

Hi all, thought I’d just let you know that 12 months later, the afore mentioned fix is still holding good.
Very Happy
