Hi all. I have a 2013 sdv6 3.0 sport black edition and I’m wanting to do an oil change. I am hearing some people say to drain the oil it has to be sucked out with a pump from the top. Others say it has a conventional sump plug. I don’t want to go and by the stuff to do it only to find I can’t becaause I need a pump. Can anyone please confirm which type it is. Thanks.

I let the garage do a 'proper' drain via the sump plug with the main service and MOT and i do a mid year oil and filter change using the top end pump method. Dead easy.

They do indeed have both.

For what it's worth, the vacuum pump method is far easier as to get to the sump plug at the bottom there is a heavy steel plate to remove and it's a pain if you don't have a ramp/helper. Some of the bolts require a spanner on the other side too.

If you're gonna vacuum it, make sure the oil is warmish so it flows easier.

Pop open your oil filler cap and you should see a tube exposed, that is where you vacuum the oil from - it’s a brilliant idea and wish my BMW had it. That tube goes all the way down into the bottom of the oil pan and allows you to get almost every drop - much easier than trying to disassemble skid plates necessary to access drain plug. My 5.0L could be different than your 3.0, so again remove the oil filler cap, look for the tube, and Bobs your uncle!

Firstly, your car has both a suction tube and a conventional drain plug. The suction tube on the 3.0ltr is not in your oil filler cap it’s in front of it and slightly to the left and has a circular arrow on it to show which way to turn it to get it off.
You obviously need to by a suction pump that holds at least 6 litres.
As for which way is better, if you suck the oil out then remove the drain plug nothing comes out, as they will both drain all the oil completely, but the suction takes about 10 minutes and the drain plug is a right PITA.
