Help!! My 2005 2.7 Sport won't start if its been left for more than a day. I've replaced the battery and nothing has changed. Its got to the point that I'm planning to get rid of it.
Does anyone have any ideas of the problem? And, just to compound the problem, the car is in the UK and I'm stuck in Saudi Arabia so it's my wife who's having to jump start it every time.

So it starts if jump started - sounds like a battery issue (yes I see you have replaced the battery but if it needs jump starting it is a battery issue. 07MY RRS TDV6

If the battery has been changed and it's any good then that would point to something is being left on or not shutting down and drawing current to flatten a battery in 24 hours.

sadly dont think we have enough details as both have said above suggests battery or a battery drain

full marks to swmbo for the jump starting can you get her to check the voltage before she unlocks it (while its still asleep)
that would tell you if the battery has held a charge or been drained.
if you have twin tow electrics that is an easy place to check

How far is it been driven after starting as to recharge a near flat battery will take a fair amount of time/miles depending what is being used (heated seats)
It could be its just not getting charge up enough so by the next day its toooooooo weak to start, time for a smart charger maybe
(have I mentioned the tow socket yet )

if its spinning over and over and needs the jump to keep going before it starts it could be heater plugs (although it has warmed up a bit the last few days)

Thanks to you all for your replies. I'll have a chat with her about testing the voltage before she opens the car. This is the second new battery its had in 5 months. Previous owner changed it in Sept

How long are the drives when it is jump started? If it's short journeys then the battery will never recharge. Indeed, it's possible that the alternator is dying and the battery has no chance to recover.

If checking the voltage via a tow socket isn't in SWMBO skill set, just have her check the battery voltage after unlocking the car. This will still give you a good indication of the state of play of the battery. Then, once it is started, check the voltage again and that'll give an indication of the alternator's state.

A weak alternator, short journeys and cold conditions would be the perfect recipe for a dead battery. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

The secret menu on a range rover tells you what voltage the battery has.
12.3v is low charged battery 12,6v is half charged 12.9v is fully charged
when running you should get 13.5+ volts. At best 14.1v?

The battery has been as low as 10v when I checked it during the brief 4 weeks I spent in the UK last year. It goes up to over 14v when its running. My wife does tend to do short journeys in it. I've been looking at a new Bosch battery with 110aH and a CCN of 920. I'm thinking this'll be a bit beefier and shouldn't run down so much between drives

If it due to the short journeys it will kill the new battery, as mine only get used once in a while i got a halfords solar charger put the solar on the window screen and the other end chargers through the odb port.

so thats 3 of us that mention Short journeys are not enough to keep a battery in good health
even if you put another new battery on if the journeys are not long enough it will just fail as well
(it will just take a bit longer to get to that point)

Short journeys are not good for a big diesel engine (DPF for one thing )

it can take 10-15 miles and 20-30 minutes just to get the Oils up to a normal temp

Looking at a way of charging it may be money better spent

One point not mentioned has the Red battery light been coming on. If not as mentioned
there is a drain on the battery

My wife tested the voltage across the battery after she returned home. It was 12.3 so she put it on charge. This morning I’ll ask her to test it again then start it and check once more while it’s running. At least that will rule out the alternator. Thanks to you all for your help and advice.

It does sound like a Ctek charger (or longer runs) might be a better investment than a new battery. But lets hear what your wife discovers regarding voltage Robin
