Engine Oil Level Sensor system fault

Hi all,

Getting the above message (Engine Oil Level Sensor system fault) and the Service menu/oil level says "Not available" - anyone experienced this before and is there a way to manually check the oil level (just to be safe) ?

Its off to indie for service in a couple of weeks so may need to bring it forward? That said, its not being used much these days with COVID so maybe it can wait?

Australia 2013 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 SE Fuji White

I had the same issue on mine and there is no other way of checking the oil level.
I had mine repaired on my L494 last month.
Luckily it was done under warranty.
Dealer had the car for 6 days and it was replaced on my 2017 L494 TDV6 by moving the front differential forward and removing the sump to replace the sender and wiring loom. Sump apparently can't be removed with the front differential in place
Glad I wasn't paying for it.
I can't believe that LR haven't fixed this issue as its been around for a long time.
They should have left a dip stick on the engine as a backup!

I’ve had this issue twice.
Repaired first time in the last months of manufacturers warranty
Second time, approx a year later, replaced by Landrover dealer under goodwill
Similarly, can’t imagine a more stupid system, with no backup dipstick.
So, say I’m going on a long journey and want to check the oil level before I go. Can i just do it, no, I’ve got to go for a drive, to get the engine up to operating temp, park up on level ground and then wait 20 minutes or so, before the system will give a reading. Crazy system
Luckily Rolling with laughter due to the oil dilution issue, I now change my oil so frequently I know exactly how much oil is in the sump

Should’ve added, if you suck all the oil out (quite easy with the right kit) then refill, you know how much is in the engine. Not convenient, but the only way, as far as I know

I read on a post on here before that if you unlatch your bonnet, leave the driver door open then go into the service menu, select oil level and quickly hit cancel on the steering wheel as the gauge comes on it will give you a reading. I will try to find the post. 2016 Yulong White L494 AB/DYN 3.0SDV6

Isn't the move to no dipstick just an emissions thing? I guess other manufacturers are doing the same thing as it allows the engine to be a sealed environment with no nasties finding their way out via the dipstick.

I remember a car that told me it had a problem before it showed anywhere else by blowing the dipstick out of the pipe. Turned out to be a blocked crankcase ventilator pipe. A Peugeot, I think it was. Today, the first thing you'd know about it would be an EML light. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for the responses guys.

Oddly when I tried it this morning, no error and it gave me a reading.

I'll keep an eye on it.

Open bonnet, ignition on, service menu, oil level display, press (cruise) cancel twice quickly. MY16, 3.0D HSE Dynamic, Barola Black, TV, Rear Entertainment, Opening Pan Roof, Meridian

So the work around will check the oil level cold?
In that situation, does the system compensate for the temperature behind low, or is the change in volume, hence level, insignificant?
If so, you’d wonder why Landrover want the level check to be when the engine is at operating temperature?

Ii can check my oil level when the engine is cold. Just press start button without pressing brake pedal and you can access oil level. There is no difference to oil level when engine is cold or warm, always on max.[/i]

Mine had it replaced by the dealer when I bought the car. Apparently it’s £60 part but up to about 14 hours of labour to change. Strange thing is, it seems to be fairly common on RRS but I never heard of it on Disco 4. Joined the X5 45e club

The issue is that oil seeps into the wiring loom, once this happens, its sump off to replace the loom and they usually replace the ultrasonic oil level unit at the same time as its a relatively cheap part. Anyway that's what they did to mine, see my post above.
