Hi all,

I'm in Mallorca, Spain.

Yesterday I had a "Charging System Fault" error showing. Within 20 mins of a bit of motorway driving, there was a clunk and everything went weird. Suddenly there was a gearbox fault too. Then ABS fault. Then Stability Control not working.


What would you say was your suggested fix please?

Is it the alternator? Cables/wires?

The battery is only about 12 months old, so it shouldn't be that.

Coincidentally, it was a rare rainy day and also it came after an error to the electronic handbrake.

I would be very grateful for any advice before I get fleeced by a mechanic.

Yep have a look to see wht the alternator is chucking out

Is it worth considering a reconditioned alternator?

I'm hoping to sell the car within the next month or two.

As long as it's a Denso one i think it will be ok as they dont like others

One more question, guys.

Is this a difficult part to change? How many hours would you suggest it would take the average mechanic please?

One mechanic said it's a long process to remove and replace a new one.

I'm on my third now at 112k miles on a 2012 SDV6. I think around £500 give or take fitted and a pain in the *** according to indy. No surprise, it's a Land Rover after all 😁.

Yours will have the ACE pump, which by all accounts is right in the way and makes things really difficult. I don't know if garrycol's has ACE but you may find it takes somewhat longer. After reading up on here (I think Disco Mikey may have commented) I took it to my indi, I think he said it took him about 5hrs. Good luck.

A new alternator on my TDV8 cost £352 at my indie back in November 2017. Not sure if that helps or not but it might give you a guide...  Robin

Thanks all. I'm looking at about 600 euros for parts and labour.

Unfortunately, the garage lied about ordering the part and it's going to take another week to fix now. So annoying, but hope it gets done properly.
